Avira AntiVir Personal - Free Antivirus

Version: 8.0

E-mail scanning would make it perfect, guess that's why you have to pay for it.

Pros: Has the best detection rates of any free AV (check av-comparatives.org and see for yourself). I don't understand the reviews talking about the slow update; my definition files are updated daily. Version 8 has a cleaner GUI as well.

Cons: No email scanning, and the annoying pop-up at update nagging you to upgrade.

AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition

Version: 7.5.4

Solid virus protection without those annoying subscription fees.

Pros: -Active protection from viruses

-Mail scanner that integrates seamlessly with just about any mail app

-new definitions available regularly

-scheduler to automate updates and virus scans

-virus vault holds viruses in quarantine until you delete them (helpful in case of false positives).

I have been using AVG for years now, and I can't recommend it highly enough. In all the years I've been using it, it has kept my system pristine. Any time I hear friends or family complaining about the cost of their AV subscriptions, I always tell them to dl AVG. Version 7.5.4 revamps the appearance a little. The UI is cleaner looking now, and the protection is as solid as ever. If you're tired of spending lots of money to keep Norton or McAfee updated, give AVG a try.

Ad-Aware SE Personal Edition

Version: 1.06

Still one of the best out there.

Pros: Ad-Aware's been around for a long time, and it just keeps getting better. Although it doesn't auto-update (in the free version) it yells at you if you go too long without checking for updates. Lavasoft comes out with new signatures quite regularly, and Ad-Aware has always detected more spyware infections than any other anti-spyware software I've tried.

Cons: Nothing much. Still one of the absolute best.

RoboForm

Version: 6.7.9

Best password manager out there!

Pros: The password manager is great, but my favorite use for Roboform is as a form filler. When you first download the program, you fill in your information, then any time you're at a website that requires lengthy forms to fill out in order to register, you can fill out the form in a single click. When creating a log-in, Roboform can also generate passwords. Password generation is very customizable, and passwords are quite strong. Of course it would be nearly impossible to remember all the different passwords you generate, but that's what a password manager is for, isn't it?

Cons: The one thing to be really careful of, is that Roboform does not create a passcard for a site after the initial creation. This means that you will have to log out of the site you just signed up on, and log back in while your password is still on the clipboard in order to create the passcard.

AntiVir Personal Edition

Version: 6.34.01.178

Highest detection rating of any free AV

Pros: I decided to try AntiVir after seeing a sidebar in PC Magazine showing the detection ratings of several AV apps. AntiVir was third on the list, the highest of any free program. However, the best part about AntiVir is its ability to coexist with other AV programs. AntiVir personal does not scan your email, but you can have both AntiVir and AVG on your system without hurting performance so I was able to keep AVG for email scanning.

Cons: Window pops up after each update asking you to buy the pro version. Personal version does not scan email.
