FreeRAM XP Pro

Version: 1.52

Not for me!

Pros: I think it work...I'm not really sure. :(

Cons: I'm running on 248 RAM (technically 256 but...) and currently have 60 + background processes. When FreeRAM XP Pro was freeing RAM, it completely slowed my system to the point that I could not do anything until it was finish. There is no official way to uninstall the program, and I'm hoping that deleting all the files will do the trick. And I'm not even sure if it helped my system in the first place. My verdict: try it and decide for yourself!

WinPatrol

Version: 9.8.1

Makes my life easier!

Pros: This is one of the better programs that I've downloaded. WinPatrol is a very simple program to use, combinding Windows system stats in one program. Doesn't use up much RAM nor does it have any "buy now" ads. Unlike Windows Task Manager, WinPatrol tells me the name of the company of a program that is running in the background. I was able to kill some of the unnecessary Startup Programs that were lagging my system. And it has an active protection that runs every so many minutes, depending on what I set it for. WinPatrol also displays the cookies for Internet Explorer and Firefox. I highly recommend this program!

Cons: Lack of info :( Have to upgrade to PLUS for detailed information. With some searching, the majority of the features are already Windows features. Otherwise, this is a wonderful program!

AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition

Version: 7.1.375

So easy my dad can use it :)

Pros: What can I say... Very simple program. Automatic updates every time the computer is started. Never in the way. Can look at the infected files and choose to delete them or quarantee them. Even tells when the virus database is out of date. :) Loads of features. Best of all: FREE!

Cons: Can't change the auto updating if leaving the computer on for days. The schedule scanning (around 8 am) is awfully slow. Interface could be better.

eTrust Internet Security Suite

Version: R2

Decent...could be better

Pros: I bought the full version, and I haven't had too many problems. The active protection on the EZ Antivirus stopped three trojans and automatically deleted them. Automatically updates definations every day. The firewall is the advanced version of Zone Alarm. It always asks before running a program for the first time. Firewall has nice interface and easy to navigate. The Pest Patrol also has active protection. Quick spyware scan. Antivirus come free with Verizon Yahoo DSL. The price of the software wasn't too bad, $25.

Cons: Antivirus doesn't have much options. All of the Zone Alarm products have to be uninstalled before installing eTrust Security Suite. Pest Patrol doesn't like to install properly with the rest of the programs. Doesn't give much information on the spyware found on the computer. The firewall doesn't seem to like Firefox! When new programs want to access the internet, a pop-up box appears. This likes to disappear often, especially if immediate action isn't taken. Haven't even bothered with the Anti-Spam program. I recommend having a back up anti-virus and anti-spyware program.

Trillian

Version: 3.1

Wonderous for lazy people ;)

Pros: I love Trillian for the fact that I can log into multiple Yahoo and AIM names. It also keeps messenger groups seperated. Can set the chat window to come up minimized so it doesn't disrupt working / playing. Fun smilies. Skinnable (haven't personally tried it yet though). Can set an automatic away message similar to AIM with any of the plug-ins. Message archiving. Loads of different options. Trillian is perfect for having just one chat program instead of using several.

Cons: The away mode needs work. If trying to keep a particular screen name invisible, it is hard to use the "set all away / back" mode because it will set the invisible name to away / back. Also, boring interface and lacks web cam abilities in the free version. Chat rooms are undesirable for the fact that it doesn't keep up well with constant entering / exiting / chatting. A slight pain to find where one can edit the profile (which represents the AIM profile, with even less characters). Smilies don't function well when talking to people who don't have Trillian. Lack a few features of Ymessenger and AIM. Long download!
