Windows Essentials Media Codec Pack

Version: 1

better than VLC for overall videos

Pros: I have now kicked out VLC. (version 8.5, and had versions prior to this) - this is now my main video player.

Although my testing was not extensive, it has handled every format i have presented to is thus far.

Fairly simple and easy to use. (At least its not the nightmare complication that VLC is)

Free (GNU GPL licence, which is free in more ways than the general public realise)

It plays many FLV files i have which i thought were dud when i was playing them through VLC, where they either; did not play, or sound but no video, or played for a small portion only. This just plays all of them without hassle.

Cons: I have decided i will now use this for most of my video watching except for when i want to take notes with seminar or tutorial type videos where i need to go backwards and forwards which this doesnt have. One can slide the pointer but this seems to take a long time for it to come into play and is not practical. (I use the jetAudio player for such, as i can do that with short cut keys and easily rewind in small increments to script the section of the video i need to have in written form)

Being their first version of player, i imagine at some point, a version will include fast forward and fast rewind buttons or short cuts.

ScrapBook for Firefox

Version: 1.2.0.8

for what it does; a definite must have

Pros: I have been using this for a while now and use this on a daily basis. saves a lot of time in that i have placed it on the toolbar; on the "links" bar, sort of like an applet, and opens (although you can use short cut keys to open or close it quickly) the saved pages into a tree looking menu on the left.

I usually access one of two things;

1. Sometimes its just quick access to my short list that is part of my short to medium term research

2. Often i need access to commonly used documents or a particular topic i am involved in on a medium term basis which makes it real quick to access.

Not everyone needs this extension, but if you do, i highly recommend you try it out. More likely it would become temporarily permanent is my guess. Its great.

Cons: This is probably arguable if it is a con or not, and is more like a suggestion or reminder that it can get very quickly out of hand in terms of the amount of information that gets stored there where it end up defeating the purpose i guess. Thats more of a self management/ self organization issue though.

Adblock Plus

Version: 0.7.2.4

More complete if suplemented with NoScript

Pros: -The ability to manually enter any web site you want to block.

-There are several Filter or block lists to choose from, to which one can subscribe. In the options you can subscribe to automatic updates.

-Import and export lists. (effectively a way of saving lists)

Cons: -Some ads are delivered by way of Java, which this software does not block. I tried many forms of the address related to the flash plug (as one example), but this did not work. I found “NoScript” covered this aspect which ABP mises.

-Browser page can be slower (although not hugely different) on fast internet connection if subscribed to several filter lists. (don’t confuse the current misnomer of “broadband” connection to mean fast internet service. This can cover a VERY wide range of speeds) My current strategy is in using my own list of items I have found through “page info” (from FF toolbar- “Tools” ) of sites I regularly visit, along with the subscriptions lists. Clicking on the “hits” tab after clicking on preferences from ABP icon will align in either ascending or descending order. The low hits or zero hits can then be removed after a trial period of surfing. (I will give it at least a week) At least in how I surf the net, this will help substantially reduce the list, and bring my speed back up again.

-If you don’t want to go the subscription route, manually adding is the other option, which can take some amount of effort, at least initially.

Cabos for Windows

Version: 0.5.5

Great Workshorse, (& i prefer it for now) but it does miss some features

Pros: I have done a lot of downloading of music and doc/pdf files, due to the high DSL2 bandwidth. I have tried Limewire Pro,& Shareaza. (have not figured out BitTorrents yet) It really does seem like a compromise and each P2P software has its Pros & Cons...

What do i like about Cabos??

It Free,, No adware/spyware or other creepies,, doesnt grind your HD silly during startup like Limewire Pro,,, Quicker than LM Pro in power up and power down,,, 30% more searches returned than LM Pro (ran searches within a second apart; both programs runnning. I excluded the very obvious RIAA / MPAA planted files that were totally out of character in file size.),,, No nag screens (buy LM pro and expect a nag screen after 6 months),****** NO CPYRIGHT FILTERING ******* (Apparently LW does filter out content),,,I search many things at one time and i love that it remembers all the tabs so i dont have to retype searches the next time i re fire up the PC and hookup. For many tab searches it is the best. (quick access,& visibility )

I can not even speculate at the why or how, but it seems to make more successfull connections when i click to download an item in LM or Shareaza,,, Speeds really do vary, but some of the higher speed single links can be decently practical.

The link on this page did not get me to the genuine download site..If you want to download you need to go to sourceforge.jp/projects/cabos/

,,, which will also get you the latest version..

Cons: In some ways it is more practial than LM Pro, but it has no search options. eg; search only for docs, or search only for programs.(although you can click a button which groups the file types in the list)

I intend to try Frostwire,(which is meant to be the same as LM but without filter or cost at all) as i do like the ability to be specific in searches so as to shorten the list... The file types are not easily distiguishable,,,

Fairly plain and ugly compared to LM or shareaza,,....... I have one request of many of you newcomers to P2P;;;;; please dont attack the P2P software developers because of corrupt files on the nextwork that have nothing to do with them. Industry is employing other companies who specialise in planting fake & infested files in order to damage the efficiency of the networks, as they see it as a threat to their to their sales..... scan your downloads for virus/ trojans etc,,, and check the file sizes against what that type of file should be. the fake files dont take long to figure out.(You dont need to have a high IQ to become acustomed to most of the fakes)

VLC Media Player

Version: 0.8.5

Plays most of the time with many file types_Sometimes hangs

Pros: This review is for version 0.8.5 (I would not have to tell you the version unless download com got their act together- no offence intended)

___Its Free (keep it up fellas)__Plays many media types__A few usefull features___Better for video content than music.

Cons: yes its ugly, but that does not bother me.

__Sometimes locks up__I very rarely watch DVDs, but the one & only DVD i just bought (Defintely not a pirated DVD), shows coloured blocks in a few places & it kept closing itself down____Non intuitive, & if you need to alter settings, you could be in for a hard time.__Definitely not to be used as a music jukebox (I think VLCs main focus is with streaming out content, than general media useage for your average joe)

------I am starting to switch to one of the other free media players that does not have the lockup problem, but i will certainly try the next version.
