Active Desktop Calendar

Version: 5.99a

Deadlines were never so PRETTY...

Pros: Clean Interface, Attractive Themes, Elegant Layouts, and does EXACTLY what I wanted a desktop calendar to do. You have an immediate "snapshot" of the month at hand OR also have LAST month/NEXT month OR have the NEXT 2 months viewable. You can see when you have appointments coming up and pretty much use the Calendar as a REFERENCE for anything TIME related. The included themes are cute but even better is the ability to SKIN your own themes so this one is definitely ONE OF THE PRETTIEST...

Cons: The other reviewer had a few valid points about this program eating up a little more memory than other programs. Their argument about this program being ALOT of eye candy is also valid but that is where I think SOME of us will differ. I wanted a desktop calendar that was ATTRACTIVE to compliment my wallpaper and generally IMPROVE the boring desktop I have to face on a DAILY BASIS. This program does NOT lack in features but it could do SOME THINGS BETTER to appease those detail oriented people who want a WORKING ORGANIZER. You have the SIDEBARS which give you information at a glance but I think MOST people will NOT like this feature. It clutters up the desktop and generally gives you TOO MUCH INFORMATION at a glance. If you HIDE them then all you have are the THUMBNAILS on the calendar itself which is ELEGANT and PRETTY but then there is NO DIFFERENTIATION between events. So you see a THUMBNAIL but you have to HOVER to see what it is where it woudl have been NICE to see a CAKE, a FLOWER, etc to denote WHAT TYPE OF APPOINTMENT IT IS. There are OTHER programs that are MORE detail oriented with COLOR CODING, STREAMING MESSAGES, etc, etc but I wanted soemthing SIMPLE, ELEGANT, and FUN. This fit PERFECTLY and if they can TWEAK some options then users can actually make it MORE DETAIL ORIENTED if they so fancied. The ONLY COMPLAINTS I have is that

1) The thumbnails are FIXED and you cannot use different images for DIFFERENT types of tasks.

2) The Outlook integration is a little clunky since you have to have Outlook OPEN to actually be able to reference it. They DO have an OUTLOOK import option but they should AUTOMATE it so you do NOT have to manually update this program with NEW tasks.

Advanced Batch Converter

Version: 3.9.76

Beware The Doppleganger...

Pros: Clean Interface, Many Options, Easy To Use...

Cons: Not a BAD program but does ALOT of things and not VERY great at any of them, so JACK OF ALL TRADES BUT MASTER OF NONE... The WORST part is that this program is IDENTICAL to "Advanced Batch Converter" so it seems someone defected from one company and started a rival firm. Sadly, the interfaces are IDENTICAL, options are IDENTICAL, even the PROBLEMS are IDENTICAL... How sad is that where you CLONE someone else's software but do not even bother IMPROVING it or making it look ANY DIFFERENT... Anyway, this program seems solid and has ALOT of options but we will just take a snapshot of ONE EXAMPLE. ICONS are NOT handled properly and you cannot save multiple icon dimensions into one ICON file, like 16X16, 32X32, etc. Worse, it does NOT handle transparencies correctly and forget about supporting Windows VISTA icons let alone Windows XP icons. Stay away from BOTH programs unless you have NO CHOICE because I HATE COPYCATS...

ReaConverter Pro

Almost, Almost, Alm - nah, never mind...

Pros: Clean Interface, Intuitive Wizards, Good Quality Output... Man, this program had so much going for it because it is VERY WELL done with regards to its useability. Very friendly, very easy, etc, etc...

Cons: Man, I almost converted over to this program FULL TIME but I am uninstalling it until they update it. I would give it 3 Stars but it is actually PRETTY GOOD, so why the UNINSTALL? Well, ICONS... Yep, I use the Icon feature HEAVILY and sadly this program does NOT do Windows XP Icons properly. I create 256X256 32BIT PNG files (FOR VISTA OF COURSE) and then convert them to Windows XP icons but this program creates HIGH QUALITY icons except for some strange SMUDGE EFFECT at the bottom. I do not know WHAT IT IS, maybe the ALPHA TRANSPARENCY since ALOT of programs seem to have a problem with this. But this program definitely does NOT handle VISTA ICONS properly let alone Windows XP icons so I cannot give it a 5. It squeeked 4 Stars because it actually does alot of other things VERY WELL but hopefully they will fix the ICON problem.

Image Icon Converter

Version: 1.3

Dubious Consumption...

Cons: I am not sure WHAT everyone is doing or talking about when this program is NOT that great. It lacks Batch Conversion, Icon Quality is poor, does NOT handle Alpha Transparency correctly, etc, etc... There are other programs just as small that do ALOT more and ALOT better so they really need to fix this one up. It has NO MAJOR FLAWS but it offers so little with a non-intuitive user interface so I am NOT sure why so many people are downloading it...
