Nvu

Version: 1.0

Good, basic HTML editor

Pros: Easy to configure and use, don't really have to know anything about how HTML works to get it to make a basic web page. Easy to choose colors, fonts, tables, etc. Advanced features let the user insert meta tags and tweak how the page displays.

Cons: In CSS mode it is clunky and gawdawful. Have to reset your settings with every paragraph, and the finished code is almost as bad as Trellis. Not recommended for doing CSS.

Foxit PDF Reader

Version: 2.2 build 2129

Good for filling forms, but...

Pros: I got this app to fill out PDF forms that were not designed to be fill-outable, and that it does quite well so one can print them out all neat and tidy. You can also draw shapes, add notes.

Cons: Not appreciably faster that Adobe. Does not smooth content, so even at modest magnification (like 400%) text and objects look blocky - like a fax. (I sent a bug report about this and have not received a reply as of two weeks later.) Leaves ugly and prominent ad if one tries to save a PDF. Renters everything to objects when printing, so if you use a PDF converter you will get a huge file.

Harmony Assistant

Version: 9.0.2

Good composition software

Pros: Easy to compose music, just drop notes on staves. Features like 'page view' and 'engraver mode' make for custom and professional results when creating sheet music. Optional 'gold' sound database (cost extra) provides far more instrument choices and better quality. Non destructive effects processor lets you change sound without changing the sound file. Lets user export to midi, aiff, wav, etc.

Cons: Not so good as recording software... latency issues, not possible to copy some effects, noticeable background noise (at least when using headphones). Difficult to manipulate digital recordings. Tech support not so good. Might be better to export midi to dedicated recording software like Logic Studio, Garage Band, etc. Also, price is $85 US, 70 euros.

iWork

It's pretty good!

Pros: Straightforward and easy to use, OS X native, fast, compatible. Pages is a word processor and DTP all in one - if you don't like their templates, make your own! Numbers features the ability to put tables, graphs, etc. all on the same sheet for easy viewing. Haven't really used Keynote, but it can import PowerPoint just fine.

Cons: Needs a database badly, I wish they would have included one. Bento is an inadequate substitute. Needs the ability to create and use macros, and more ways to customize for convenience. I guess I was hoping for a cross between ClarisWorks ease-of-use and WordPerfect Office customizability.

FileZilla (Intel)

Version: 3.0.9.2

Awesome and easy!

Pros: A more conventional FTP client than CyberDuck, this one has the typical 'local' and 'remote' (or 'here' and 'there') sides. Log window lets you know what's going on, and transfer window tells you what you're doing. QuickConnect automatically remembers your sites, no fiddling with bookmarks. And it's FREE!

Cons: First time I launched it hung for me too, but it's worked fine ever since. I don't get the postage stamp icon... it's not an e-mail client.
