Avira AntiVir Personal - Free Antivirus

Version: 8.1.0.326

Excellent Free NOD32 alternative with easy to track Reports~~

Pros: -I've been using Antivir PE Classic for my PC since 7.x having learnt the NOD32 2.7 enterprise license from the company I work for won't cover NOD32 3.0 or Eset SS, presuming there will be limited support for the outdated version

-Unbroken chain of Advanced+ adwards from AV-Comparatives for On-Demand scans

-Automatically upgraded to 8.0 and then 8.1 without interference with the stability and integrity of the WinXP registry

-Easy to Schedule weekly scans and cleans

-Comprehensive reports make it easy to track malware alerts and specific updated files during automatic updates

-For more than a year Antivir PE has been getting along very well with Threatfire, Windows Defender and Firewall, IE7, and other XP SP2+ built-in security mechanisms

Cons: -Splash Screen on Windows Start-up

-Nag Screen after definition or programme updates

-Unable to set default action for real-time AV Guard and require a user to choose action from a list

-For these reasons I cannot recommend or install any copy of this excellent product to the Machines of my friends' who asked for my help. Since I am not prepared to advice them via phone or house calls whenever a Nag Screen or a Malware Alert pops out from any of their screens

Comodo Firewall Pro

Version: 2.4.18.184

Solid as Rock~~

Pros: -It is Free

-Provides an additional layer of defense against undesired port communications and UPnP; rules similar to a hardware firewall. Especially useful when using a router that does not support disabling UPnP or when a user does not know how to disable it in Windows

-Notifies a user whenever an unknown application is trying to access to the internet or when an unknown application is trying to gain access to another application to do so, and offers to remember the choices of the user

-Flexible options which enable a user to taylor-make CFP to suit their personal needs, be it home-networking, campus-networking or internet-only

Cons: -Crashes occassionally after allowing a connection via pop-up

Webroot Spy Sweeper

Version: 5.5

5 Stars for the built-in ad-blocker; -2 Stars for the core (WinXP)

Pros: -Excellent ad-blocker which blocks all adverts in download-dot-com, Yahoo, msn and more; outperformed the one in Norton Internet Security 2005

-No false-positives during the 3-day testing period

-Allows a user to choose to or not to incorporate Sophos Antivirus during installation

Cons: -Uses quite a bit of RAM and CPU resources

-Causes occasional Blue-Screen-Of-Death in WinXP Home SP2 even when all "competitors" like Nod32, Comodo Firewall Pro, Counterspy and Windows Defender were removed

Comodo Firewall Pro

Version: 3

A lot smoother than CFP 2.4 when Defence+ is permanently deactivated~~

Pros: -It is FREE

-Uses negligible CPU resources and only 4548kb of RAM (cfp.exe)

-Responded a lot quicker to pop-up answers than 2.4 whilst causes no interference with overall internet performance

-Global rules in Network Security Policy settings take precedence over any predefined port sets and are easy to adjust

-Loads of new predefined security levels which save users time to customise

-Did not cause a single conflict issue since I've installed it 2 weeks before

-Defence+ (buggy) can be permanently deactivated in Defence+ Settings>General

-My PC is running CFP 3 on XP SP2 + IE7 with Avira AntiVir 7.06 PE Classic, Windows Defender and ThreatFire 3.0.12.6

Cons: -Defence+ seemed to me on its first glance, a promotional campaign for the company's Comodo Antivirus 2.0beta. A closer inspection revealed, however, that Defence+ is way more advanced and came with a huge whitelist, to certain extent resembling Spyware Terminator 2's database-referenced HIPS. However it is a bit buggy at the moment:

1)Even when Installation mode is activated, a pop-up STILL appears for every single binary copied to the system

2)The "My Own Safe Files" list doesn't seem to work: some files are even rejected from entries for the reason "....seems it is already there" which was a false statement

Overall I am still very happy with the product CFP 3 and I look forward to a fine-tuned Defence+ A big thank to Comodo and 2 thumbs-up dd

Advanced WindowsCare Personal

Version: 2.8.0.854

Made my fan a lot quieter~~

Pros: -Very clean menu based GUI

-Can fix registry, tweak system settings, immunise spysites, etc by one single click whilst a user can also choose to perform only one specific area of repair; or even engage in entry-specific corrects

-Out of the box optimisations like disabling error reporting, visual effects; limiting dnscache and a lot more

-Added over 30,000 advert sites strings to IE7 Restricted Zone whilst to my surprise, did not slow down the start-up of the browser at all

-Clean-up invalid, ophaned or useless registry entries

-Smartram flushes system processes to pagefile during usage peak

Cons: -Made Yahoo! my default IE7 search engine without seeking my consent; which is a fundamental breach of security and privacy and for that alone I took 1 Star away from my rating. I won't be so lenient should that occur in the next release I guarantee.
