Anonymizer Anonymous Surfing

Version: 6

Works fine for me

Pros: There are a bevy of anonymous surfing programs out there that use public proxy servers, but there is no way to know when those servers (some in places like Turkey and Iran) are actually fronts for malware operators who collect your IP or even plant malware on your computer! The main reason I like Anonymizer is that they own their own servers--your guarantee that you aren't getting scammed.

Another reviewer said Anonymizer slows his surfing down badly. I have not had that experience. I have a high-speed connection (cable). I notice a VERY slight slowly but hardly noticeable, I had to pay attention closely to notice it at all and sometimes there is no slowing at all.

Cons: The Download.com reviewer is right about lengthy download and install time. Installation on my XP system took six full minutes and that doesn't count the download time. There's 31 megs of code so I don't know why you would expect it to take any less, however. You can't have it all.

Second Copy

Version: 7.1.0.3

Tried 'em all, Second Copy is best

Pros: Easy to set up and use once you "get it". Another one I tried I never could quite figure out what they wanted in setup screens, others too complicated. Second Copy has plenty of options to customize your copy or sync and they're easy to figure out. I sync all my document files between two computers and it does a fine job.

Cons: Like another reviewer, I would like it to sync open files, but that may be asking too much since an open file can change from one second to the next. It asks you if you want it to try to copy open files but this never works so they should remove this option. This is the only reason I gave it four stars rather than five.

JetAudio Basic

Version: 7.0.5.3040

Beware Trojan in update

Pros: Haven't used it much so can't give a fair evaluation. I'm giving it only one star to sound an alarm about trojans in updates. See cons below.

Cons: I'm here only to warn that Bitdefender virus software found a trojan in three Jet Audio update files on my computer on February 25, 2008. No assumptions should be made about the source of the trojan--someone could be hijacking their site or simply the name to send out trojans. So be sure to run your virus checker on any updates.

ChoiceMail Free

Version: 3.1

Messes up email settings, removes mail from server

Pros: At first I was extremely enthused. The paid version is totally configurable to user's wishes, works as it should.

Cons: Can't understand high rating of this software, because after a couple of days I discovered that Choicemal removes all the emails from the server when it downloads them. If you do that anyway, fine. But for some, like me, it is essential to leave emails on server for a designated time so they may be accessed by others or from different computers.

I disabled Choicemail while waiting for a response from their Support team about that issue, and that's when I discovered it also changes all email account settings so that I was unable to get any email until I went in and reconfigured all my emails accounts to their original settings. No Thanks!

I think people post enthused ratings prematurely, before they have used a program long enough to discover all its weaknesses.

TimeTo

Version: 2006 (06.04.16)

Better than any others, but not perfect yet

Pros: I have lost count of the number of these task programs I have tried; most limit you extremely in how you configure and schedule reminders and deadlines. The greatest strength of TimeTo Pro is that the publisher doesn't decide for you how to set up reminders and deadlines. Almost infinite options are available for both, and they are easy to set up.

Cons: Unfortunately, TimeTo Pro doesn't allow you to nest tasks (tree structure). The best you can do is list tasks under a project name, but there are no subtasks possible, and no categories. I simply can't find any program that has all the features I am looking for. I've given TimeTo Pro four stars for allowing me to configure deadlines and reminders MY way. I would give it five if it allowed hierarchical task structure.
