Bloodshed Dev-C++

Version: 4.9.9.0

Buggy but probably usable for most

Pros: The concept is great, a free to use UI for gcc. Everything should be perfect, but...

Cons: I find this program intolerably infuriating. I've used it over the past 6 months so I'm not speaking from a knee-jerk reaction. There are some irritating flaws which get more annoying the more you notice them. It might not sound like much but I am continually left with little 'helper' pop-up tooltips that just won't go away until I close the application and open it up again. I've also found that it can sometimes mysteriously close files in an open project. At first I thought I was probably closing them by accident but after repeated use I have to conclude that the application is taking it upon itself to do this. It could have been great but for my next project I'll be using Visual C++.

Baby Boom

Version: 1.1

Too simplistic

Pros: The graphics are really cute. Each machine does something different to a baby as it gets 'processed' which is fun to watch. The concept of the game is easy to understand and help screens as the game starts let you know what you need to do.

Cons: There's no depth. Once you've played the game for a few minutes and seen the different machine animation you're probably about done. There's nothing much else to drive you to play further, it just gets harder.

Leaping Freddy

Version: 1.1.3

Jet Set Willy style platformer

Pros: This game reminds me a lot of Jet Set Willy from the speccy. It's a well-made platforming collect-em-up. It has all the classic platform game elements, ladders, spikes, keys, doors, conveyor belts, wierd monsters, etc. The graphics are crisp, look good and animate smoothly.

Cons: The main problem I found with the game was that it was too slow. After realising you've gone the wrong way it's quite a thought to start heading back to get something you missed. The player character just doesn't feel as agile as it could be. Even simple things like being unable to jump off ladders makes it feel quite sluggish.

Wing: Released Spirits

Version: 1.0

Interesting but confusing

Pros: This looks great. When you start it up you feel like you're in line for a great 3D adventure. The area open for you to explore is large and there are creatures and people scattered everywhere.

Cons: It seems like it was too big a product for the team and has a slightly unfinished feel to it. The collision detection can make the character jump around. Sometimes if you try and interact with someone in front of you then you end up speaking to someone you're not really looking at. The combat is also fairly clumsy. I would say the main problem is that you're not given a clear enough goal. There is a big area you can wander around in but I was never really sure where I should be trying to head.

Haunted House

Short and snappy

Pros: This is a very brief game and is fairly easy to get into.

Cons: I wasn't really sure what the objects were but it made more sense once I read the instructions. Some things that happen seem quite random. I thought I was doing well switching on most of the lights in the house but then all of a sudden they all went off. I guess that's the scary element of it though.
