Picasa

Version: 2.0

Visually pleasing with many editing features

Pros: It has a visually attractive interface. Good picture tagging. Great picture editing ability. Can generate a slide show on CD. While you can automatically reorder your pictures in several ways, manual reordering can also be done - with beautiful visual effects! Fast lookup when doing picture searches. Keywords can be attached to pictures for fast lookup. You can play a folder of MP3 files in the background.

Cons: No flexible zooming, e.g., no ability to do a point or box zoom using the mouse. The picture caption display is unreliable (sometimes it displays and sometimes it doesn't). The font, size, or positions of captions can't be changed. There are no transition effects, although there is a nice fade between pictures. The picture background can't be changed. Limited EXIF picture camera data. No EXIF picture text data (Image Description, Photographer, User Comment). No choice in assigning pictures to layout boxes when printing them, and only 6 layouts available. An audio file can't be associated with

a specific picture.

PicaJet Photo Organizer

Version: 2.4

Strong in photo organization and picture data, weak in other areas

Pros: Some good photo editing tools. Almost an overwhelming variety of tools to organize pictures by (e.g., categories). The full-screen slide show can have audio background. Good EXIF & IPTC display capability. The few transition effets available were pleasing. Their "FX" version has more features, (but costs).

Cons: On startup, starts scanning my entire disk for pictures (lengthy!) Insufficient documentation. Often there was strange technical terminology in the documentation that was there. Sorting and ordering pictures didn't seem to work. Weak on pan and zoom. Weak on picture captioning (none on the slide show). Weak printing ability.

XnView

Version: 1.74

Strong in its ability to convert file formats, weak in its ability to display

Pros: Can read a huge number of picture file formats and convert them.

Cons: No installation program provided. When browsing pictures, there is no way to go to a specific picture. No manual reordering. You can't pan with the mouse. When viewing a picture in "full screen" mode, you can't pan, zoom, or go to any other picture without exiting that mode. No picture information is available. No captioning can be done. There are no transition effects. There is no audio ability. Printing a picture within the program is not possible.

FlipAlbum 5 Standard

Version: 5.5

Use only if a very traditional "photo album" look is desired

Pros: Well done graphics. You can select a picture by its thumbnail. Manual sorting is available. Picture borders can be displayed.

Cons: No pan & zoom ability. Inflexible picture captioning. Can't use a picture's EXIF data as part of the caption. Can't play a picture's sound file while the picture is being displayed. Only one transition effect (the page flip animation).

PhotoJam

Version: 3.0

Basic slide show building program with several drawbacks

Pros: Some nice "style" effects (e.g., falling snowflakes). Background music can be played.

Cons: I didn't like the way it took over the entire screen. There appeared to be no automatic picture ordering. Even though "full screen" display is used, the pictures only take up half of this area. Limited picture navigation in "controls" mode, no navigation in slide show mode. I was unable to get a picture's caption to display along with the picture. Can't select your own background music in the evaluation version. No foreground music.
