IrfanView

Version: 4.2

Improving !

Pros: Much more user-frienly than the two previous versions. The display come automatically to the monitor size, and you have a "center" function for printing. The zoom-in zoom-out function is perfect ; it had some flaws in the two previous versions, now you can visualize any part of the picture you wish while zooming into it.

Cons: No other languages than German and English yet. But I suppose they will come.

ALO Video Converter

Version: 1.12

Poor quality

Pros: It does convert !

Cons: The AVI files which result are of an extremely poor quality, especially when converted from Real files (it is a little better from WMV). The sound is really trashy, and poorly synchronized with the video. Even if the price is low, it isn't worth buying. Perhaps the new version is good, but I haven't tried it, since I have discoverd Super C, which is much better, and free.

ScreenVirtuoso Pro

Version: 2.50

Fairly good

Pros: Does excellent AVI files, which can be viewed on a home DVD player with a quality near to broadcast TV. Worth buying for those who want to get an extensive DVD collection to watch on a TV set. You can really watch them on your sofa with a glass in the hand and some snackers at your side, like a video cassette or a movie on the TV, without any stress about bad quality nor fear of crashing picture or sound. It even gives better results than some file converters (I won't name them here because I don't want to be nasty ! :=) ).

Cons: Needs a very powerful system : on my computer, which is not so old though, it crashes 9 time on 10 on starting and I have to try back until it accepts working ! The interface is not very user-friendly, you have to make several tests before understanding the functions, and moreover, the defaults settings are less than optimal, without any hints about which ones to select - I haven't checked in the help : I think you shouldn't need it for such a software, at least for the most frquently used functions. And don't forget to disable the screensaver, otherwise it will record your screensaver instead of the video you want ! As for the files it makes, they are excellent, with the little defect that there is some lag of synchronisation between the audio and the video, at least in AVI format, but this is not so blatant that it can prevent you to watch them with pleasure. Doesn't work on every streaming video : I have tried once in Winamp and it hasn't recorded anything (or a blak screen, I mean).

Ad-Aware 2007

Version: 7.0.1.3

Unfinished

Pros: I can't say yet, I must wait for a new version which works.

Cons: It crashes systematically during the scan. I suppose it is a beta version, but in such case, Lavasoft shouldn't market the Plus and the Pro versions before all the problems are fixed.

Seems a little more complicated than the old one, but one can't say for sure until they release a correctly-working version, which one can test extensively.

Thanks God I now always keep safe the installers of the old versions for all my softwares !

SpywareBlaster

Version: 3.4

Excellent

Pros: It does its work in silence, and with the updates, you are sure to block all the nasty spies (which I have suffered of once, and I can tell that it is not pleasant to get advertisement windows that spring in the middle of your screen every 5 minutes). Since I got SpywareBlaster, I never had to suffer of such problems anymore. I have had a look at the list of the forbidden items : there you can find well known commercial disturbances as Bargain Buddy, Falkag, etc., etc., but also thousands of porn and even (by the name, it seems to me) pedophile, racist, and so on, addresses. Moreover, you can nevertheless allow manually the specific addresses to be accessed if you really want to go there (at your own risks, but you are free to do so). Combined with a good antivirus, and with Ad-Aware to eliminate the few adwares which could have gone through, it is the perfect protection tool for your computer.

As for the automatic updates, I do not mention that in the cons : the software is given permanently to everybody for free, the manual updates take at most 2 minutes to do, and it is fair to pay a little if you want more ; after all, I think it must cost to developp the software, why not donating or paying a very little amount (it is less than 10 dollars, if I remember) to get a supplement of comfort ?
