AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition

Version: 7.5.4

P U K E !!!!!!!!!!

Pros: I don't get this. It doesn't DO ANYTHING!!!! What's the joke? If you try to get "help" through their "forum," all you get is an endless stream of random answers to random questions -- NO SITE SEARCH. (Am I supposed to let their software find the virus and then fix it myself? I find NOTHING in the program to fix ANYTHING!)

Cons: Everything above.

Webroot Spy Sweeper

Version: 4.0

Just another face.

Pros: Well-packaged, nice enough user interface.

Cons: Another "utility" that wants to own your system. Too heavy on system resources, too intrusive when in active state. Tries to bolster its "value" by calling common cookies "malware" (if two cookies do the same thing, why is one more evil than the other?). Also, after installing, updating, and running a sweep, tried AShampoo's new entry and it found another half-dozen entities Spy Sweeper didn't. As far as I'm concerned, none of the anti-virus or anti-adware programs is worth a purchase price -- none covers everything, all make bogus claims, and I still haven't found anything in a retail program that can't be achieved with freeware if you have the right downloads.

PHP Designer 2005

Version: 3.0.6

Impressive....

Pros: Truth is, a lot of what this program does is beyond my scope of knowledge, although I'm gradually assimilating it. Even so, it's obvious this is a very well-conceived piece of software that integrates a range of capabilities in a convenient package.

Cons: I'd probably have to know a lot more to find anything wrong.

MagicDisc

Version: 2.1.28

Installation Problems on XP

Pros: Tried a similar program a couple of years ago and it worked well. This one didn't.

Cons: Ran normal setup in XP but was never able to open the core program, so never able to set up any virtual drives. I did get quick-launch icons that don't seem to do anything by themselves.

MAJOR PROBLEM -- THIS PROGRAM WON'T UNINSTALL THROUGH WINDOWS.

HTML Executable

Version: 3.2

Well conceived, good interface, executes cleanly....

Pros: Just getting involved in the e-books thing. This is a good entry point from the standpoint that it allows the user to convert an existing website into one of several e-book formats while retaining all of the characteristics and behavior of the original site, only "off-line." The user interface is well organized and the prompting is detailed enough to allow a novice to start creating almost immediately. One of the things I like about this program, is the ability to use Java, Javascript, etc. Tried another program (EBooksWriter Lite) which doesn't support any of those facilities but tries to substitute other ones in their place. That's all fine if you want to learn another whole gamut of things, but HTML Executable lets you retain what you have and build on that.

Cons: The only problem I've had with this program so far is that, having created an executable e-book from a website and saving it according to the protocol in the program, I now can't find it on the disc. I'm sure I'll figure out how to avoid this pitfall, but it's a bit frustrating (using the "File" tab doesn't help, because there's no retention of recently accessed files in the drop-down menu). Also, like so many pieces of independent software, this one has some misspellings, grammatical problems, etc. (Doesn't anybody know how to proofread anymore?)
