Active Ports

Version: 1.4

Good Overall

Pros: Shows all TCP/IP information being transferred and by what programs. Allows user to see if spyware, etc. is running.

Cons: As reviewer Steve Hazen says, "Norton Internet Security 2005 incorrectly identifies this program as spyware." Not the programs fault, but still a pain.

AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition

Version: 7.289

Better than standard versions of Norton and Macaffee

Pros: Regular updates (more often than the weekly ones offered by Norton) combined with it's smaller size (much less CPU used than beastly Norton or Macaffee) make it a preferred program for the home user.

Skype for Windows

Version: 1.1

Works Great!

Pros: Crystal clear audio and free service (unlike the newly announced AOL, for example) make it an immediate hit. Long distance calling, voice mail and the ability to setup a phone number at your computer (all cost-based services) make Skype even better.

LogMeIn

Version: 2.0.461

Great Free Software!

Pros: This product allows me to access clients on the other side of the country without having to use telephone-based tech support. Business travel is a breeze as well; I can access my files and edit them across the globe with an internet connection or pda. Highly recommended.

Cons: Some minor issues but mostly based with client trust and not the software itself.

Mozilla Firefox

Version: 1.0.1

I Can't Say Enough

Pros: Firefox uses minimal memory in comparison to IE and provides a number of not-so-well-known features including a built-in RSS feed and a mail function that syncs with Thunderbird or even Outlook. Tabbed browsing and customizable everything make this browser a must-have.
