Delete Duplicates for Outlook Express/Windows Mail

Version: 2.8

Fast, does what it's supposed to do

Pros: Very fast considering how many messages it had to process in my case. Well designed interface with adequate options to retain/delete/move detected duplicates. Works as advertised.

Cons: Very minor complaint, assuming the program doesn't already address it and I just plain missed it: in the list of detected duplicates, only the duplicates are shown. It would be helpful if there were some way to see the other copies and where they resided. How about an option to view or hide the extra copies in the list of detected duplicates, with the duplicates all marked somehow? The originals could be could be viewed or hidden repetitively until the user is ready to start deleting, moving, or saving the detected duplicates. However, the program works fine without that added feature; it would just be nice to have.

Aid4Mail Professional

Version: 1.974

Does what it says, easy to use

Pros: Works exactly as advertised, a rare and welcome thing these days.

Cons: A nice addition would be a folder structure integration option, i.e. instead of migrating a folder structure from Thunderbird to an "Imported Messages" folder in Outlook Express, have the option to merge the Thunderbird folders and messages right into the Outlook Express folder structure. If this operation is attempted manually by dragging folders from the "Imported Messages" to the Outlook Express personal folders, folders with duplicate names are not merged. Instead, the duplicate in the Thunderbird folder structure has "(1)" appended to its name and is copied into the Outlook Express structure as a new folder. A real merge function would be handy in cases like that.

But that's only a nit about personal uses. It's a fine program as is.

MailStore Home

Version: 2.5

Can't export folder structures to Outlook, useless

Pros: Nothing.

Cons: Message folder structures cannot be exported to Outlook. Each folder has to be exported one at a time by selecting all of the messages in the folder and selecting "Export" in a context popup. Completely useless for anyone who works with large folder structures.

The Collectors Crown

Version: 5.3.60

Arguably the most pretentious software on the market

Cons: Web site boasts this is "arguably the finest software on the market." The chest-thumping doesn't stop there. The user interface is a complete overload of large, clumsy buttons and in-your-face application backgrounds. Program response on an XP SP2 3.2GHz system is slow and ponderous. Workflow takes forever to complete the simplest tasks of data entry. The application window takes over the XP desktop in fullscreen mode. The only way to access other desktop items or the task bar is via the windows Alt-Tab hotkeys, or by clicking on "Quit" in the main window. When "Quit" is clicked, a prompt appears to minimize the program to the taskbar, cancel, or "No" (which means really quit the program). Good grief. I don't think I've ever used such badly designed software that takes itself so seriously. What else does it do besides flatter itself? Oh yeah, it's supposed to manage collections. Not for this collector it doesn't; I'm too serious about collecting to be impressed by slow, boring light shows.

Doesn't work in XP SP2

Cons: Doesn't work in Win XP SP2. Access violation occurs if attempt is made to add new record. Floating point error occurs when program is exited.
