AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition

Version: 7.5.4

works for FREE

Pros: Most importantly, IT'S FREE. Then it does what it says it does. I also use Avira's AntiVir to alternate scans, just in case one misses something. (I do the same thing with my anti-spyware software.) I like the new interface, the updated look of AVG.

EclipseCrossword

Version: 1.2.54

great teacher tool!

Pros: * easy to use

* crossword wizard is very user-friendly, very easy to understand

* it's FREE!

* printouts look great!

The wizard walks you through each step, and if you decide to back and change something, it's very easy to do that too. There are options for different layouts, plus you can include a word bank. The printed puzzle has a gray shadow around the boxes, so you don't waste printer ink printing black boxes.

Sage for Firefox

simple, friendly, effective

Pros: I'm new to the world of RSS feeds, etc. Sage was very easy for me to understand and operate. I tried collecting my feeds thru Thunderbird, but found the process clumsy and difficult. Sage worked great from the start, sits neatly in a sidebar and shows me summaries of the content in the main screen. It's simple and effectively handles basic newsfeed activities.

Cons: Every once in a while, some feeds mysteriously stop working. Something about a "parsing error", whatever that means. I have found that it is usually resolved whenever Sage releases an update, so I assume it's a compatibility issue. It's rare, so it hasn't bothered me too much.

FastStone Image Viewer

Version: 2.7

FREE and easy to use

Pros: I like the hidden menus that appear on different sides of the screen. I've been very impressed with the output quality of this product and it's companion FastStone Image Resizer.

Product:

CCleaner

Version: 1.28.277

SMALL, SIMPLE, SUPER

Pros: It does what it says. It cleans the "*****" that accumulates in the nooks and crannies of the computer (no, you still have to clean the keyboard yourself, sorry.) It's a small program, but it works like a charm. It has a clean, easy-to-use interface. It has safety features (backup options) in place for those who (rightly so) are nervous about mucking out their registry. It's very quick in its execution (unless it's been awhile since you've cleaned your computer). The best part? Of course--IT'S FREE! For the first time since I started my download craze, I am going to donate to the author of this program, because it is consistantly THAT GOOD.
