Product:

7-Zip

Version: 4.42

Excellent compression + CLI for automation

Pros: Excellent compression ratios. Exceeds about everything else out there including WinRAR. Makes decent sfx files, though WinRAR is better at this. It's open source and secure with AES256 passphrase encryption from GUI or CLI.

Cons: 7-Zip File Manager is weak compared to WinRAR and WinZip, but it is open source and is getting better with each release.

Nero 7 Ultra Edition

Version: 7.2.7

Bloated and not as good as it once was...

Pros: A solid burning applciation for day to day use.

Cons: Nero v6 series was the best developed product to date. When it had bugs, Nero was quick to fix them (every 30 days or so)... with this release, not so. I say the product is bloated, and it is, but I did like Vision in v6, but in v7, it rarely works with each update. I think Nero has lost focus. That said, I still like Nero, but I really like another product ONES (Optical New Edge Storage) and use it more.

Product:

TrueCrypt

Version: 4.2

Been using this for sometime and it is excellent!!!

Pros: Command line mounting is a plus and it is portable... with a little reading you can figure out how to use this with a USB flash drive. The multiple OS support is great. And I agree with a previous poster that this is better than PGP Disc Encryption. Another user claimed to lose his data and was frustrated with the mounting of the volume... My response to that, just read the forums and the manual. A ton of thought went into this product and it's open source/FREE!!!!

Cons: Not that I am a Mac user... and their site says it is coming... The ability to take your TC volumes from platform to platform would be great!!! Other than that future enhancement, it is a great product.

Product:

Comodo Firewall

Version: 2.3.5

Impressive, usable personal firewall

Pros: As good as some paid products (ZA PRO, Sunbelt KPF) in some ways and so far what I have seen is that is is pretty stable. I am using v2.3.6.81. Has less overhead than ZA and performs nicely. My system passed Shields UP and other scan sites. Oh, it is free. I'd select this over Norton, McAfee, Kaspersky, and Trend Micro... and I'd pay for it!

Cons: Interface takes a little getting used to. I'd like to see some of the features in Sunbelt KPF and ZA get implemented in this product, but I don't think I will have to wait too long, they have a great support forum and seem to be working on issues in the product. Something I am sure Sunbelt is not doing with KPF and ZA has issues of it's own that have been there since the earlier sub versions of 6.5.xxx.

FastStone Image Viewer

Version: 3.5

Excellent Image Browsing tool!

Pros: Excellent for browsing through your images and free for personal use... I would pay if it would unlock the software to make it faster.

Cons: A little slow at reading my Olympus E-510's ORF/RAW files, but it does read them!
