Active@ Eraser

Version: 4.1.0.3

demo is bogus, other Lsoft program reveals the truth

Pros: Looks like it will erase internet activity.

Cons: I ran the demo to "wipe" my hard drive of previously deleted files. Active Eraser supposedly did a single pass erase, but my suspicions were raised because it did that erasure so fast - just a few minutes.

My suspicions were confirmed - when you run Lsoft's other program

i.e. Active Undelete, you can still find plenty of deleted files on your computer. So at the very least - the demo is bogus, as far as erasing deleted files.

Active Undelete

Version: 5.1.010

tried the demo, seems thorough

Pros: I ran it on a full strength sector search which found alot of stuff that I had deleted. If I ever need to retrieve lossed data, this product looks like it can do the job.

Cons: The interface can be somewhat confusing and takes a little time to figure out. The interface could be a little more streamlined for us dummies.

The demo allows you only to recover a 64K or less file, which in itself is not a bad thing for a demo. You still get to view all that is potentially recoverable if you buy the product.

Tradewinds

Version: 1.0

good for kids, but hey CNET overlooked the adware/spyware

Pros: This trading game is good for kids. The interface is simple and the game is easy to pick up.

Cons: If you're looking for a trading game with some depth, this is not it. There's only a few cities to visit, at least in the demo.

** But most importantly, CNET with its new adware zero-tolerance policy (enacted April 28 2005) apparently overlooked this game. I installed and played the demo. Then I ran Spybot Search and Destroy and it came back with 22 instances of WildTangent on my computer. Now to be fair, WildTangent did make itself known right up front during the installation but Wildtangent is still adware/spyware in the sense that it is retrieving information off my system. And Spybot considers it spyware. Whether or not CNET does is another matter.

X-Wing Alliance demo

Old game, old graphics, oddly just released on CNET

Pros: Well, I guess the pro's are that you get to fly a ship like the Millennium Falcon

Cons: Uh, this game demo is like for Windows 98. And you have to have a joystick to play it. The graphics are definitely old time. Readme file says you only need like 4Mb video card. I couldn't really play it since I don't have a joystick.

Lego Star Wars demo

if you like Star Wars and LEGOs, try this cool demo

Pros: For anyone who likes Star Wars and LEGOs. Crisp 3D graphics with reflections off surfaces. Music and sounds from Star Wars. Entertaining to play with characters from Star Wars. Combat action reminds you of the films. Mostly entertaining as an opportunity to participate in the scenes from Star Wars. Children and adults who are fond of LEGOs and Star Wars would like this, at least as a demo.

Cons: Camera view out of your control. I wish I could play it from the first person perspective, but apparently not.

Not really a combat game in the serious sense of say a 'Far Cry'. Haha, ok maybe I am too demanding. :-)
