Daedalus

Version: 2.2

AMazing! Installs easily, Super-powerful, A bit daunting for Dad

Pros: This really is, as it says, the most powerful maze making program. It makes many types of mazes, using many difficult algorythms, in any size, many shapes, and 2 or three (or perhaps more) dimensions.

It installed on my XP system seamlessly. I was making mazes within a few minutes (once I had read the introduction to the help that explained point 2 below).

If you just want a quick maze, then there are online creators that will do the job. If you want control over any and every aspect of the maze you create analysis of its difficulty then this is the real mcoy.

Cons: 1) It wants to install itself in a deadalus directory in the C drive. I changed that to program files thinking, stupidly, that it would create a daedalus director in there as most programs do, but it is installed in the root of Program Files. Solution: create a Deedalus directory in program files, first and browse to that directory. If you don't install into C:/Daeduls the shortcuts in the program menu do not seem to be updated to the new location.

2) The mazed looked wong at first, as if they were missing the top and left hand side. This is because the mazes are created with the paths in black and the walls white. For printing use Bitmap>All>inverty all, or Create>Polished maze (also just type the / key). This is explained in the help file so it is not reallly a problem but a bit counter intuitive.

3) As the programmer says "All the various commands may seem confusing at first" - yes, that just about sums it up. With the immense power of this software, there is an inevitable learning curve. But it is possible to make mazes (beaing in mind two above) straight away upon installation.

4) I wish there were an undo command. The Edit "save bitmap" and "paste bitmap" achieve the same effect however.

Blogger for Word

ONLY text No Images

Pros: It is free, installs with one click and integrates seemlessly into word. Download and edit previous posts as well as create new ones. Use spell check and Word formatting.

Cons: Who has a text only blog these days? If you do, then this is the product for you. If you have images (or audio, video) in your blog then this is useless.

Even if you add the image prior to editing using this application, the image will be removed if you re-upload.

When image support is added I hope it is not tied into the blogger/google service. I use Flickr, so this application is useless to me.

It uses text not icons so the toolbar is surprisingly unattractive for a google/blogger product. I expected to see an orange B.

Kirby Alarm

Version: 2.1

Lookout Outlook, you beast

Does a lot of the things that Outlook can do but without the flab. Very stable. Intuitive interface. Does not use much memory. Quick to start up. Does a lot more than just make noises (sends emails, sends popup messages, starts programs, is started by system events). I wish it did all these things at once, but that is just greed. Download it now.

Notepad++

Version: 4.0.1

Not very useful to non Anglophones

Pros: It looked very powerful and clean and simple too but it was no use to me for the reasons explained below.

Cons: It seems to me that it is pretty useless to those that are writing in non Englilsh ascii encoded languages since it does not have the ability to change between encodings, and there are a lot of encodings used.

For example most Microsoft software uses a non Internet compatible encoding so it is important to be able read write and convert. In the Japanese language case it would be nice to be able to convert between MS's Shift JIS, and the two internet standards UFT-8 and EUC-JP, but Notepad++ does not seem capable of doing this. Those using Eastern European languages, Chinese and any other two byte language will all be faced with the same problem, and not find Notepad++ all that useful (unless they are just writing in program code, or in their own language in unicode only).

The Japanese free text editor Sakura does provide multiple encodings and encoding conversion functionality, so most Japanese users are happy, but being an anglophone I would have preferred a text editor with an English interface. Alas, that was not to be. I am uninstalling Notepad++.
