Inzomia viewer

Phones Home

Pros: It does as advertized.

The layout is okay. It puts the directory browser in the bottom right; though against standard convention, I find this approach more natural.

I would not call it a "trial" version. It seems fully funtional. The overlaying logo it not obtrusive.

Cons: -It actually gave me this error:

"...you need to let the IZView3.exe file access internet." Anything that phones home does not fit my definition of free. It doesn't really nag you to buy it, but it cirtainly does a lot of hinting.

-Will not just browse directories, you have to add the files to the "playlist."

-It does not handle password protected Zip files.

Akkai MD5

Version: 1.0

Lacking.

Pros: Accurately generates MD5 sum. Uninstaller works (via Add/Remove Programs).

Cons: Does NOT compare sums, as implied. Does not load or create MD5 files. Slow (Took over 30 sec to compute MD5 of 50MB file on a 4 GHz Dual Processor macine). Basically has no features. No support, web site doesn't even mention the product.

Trillian

Version: 3.1

Spying on you.

Pros: Connects with all listed IM services. Sleek and effective, nice interface, nice automation. Finally supports reading HTML in profiles. Connections are more stable (especially over wireless) than some competitors.

Cons: Trillian 3 Monitors your keystrokes and mouse movements (ZoneAlarm Pro). Further more, it makes a secure connection to [*****).

I cannot in good conscience recommend this program unless it's the only one you can make work right for you.

BuddyTalk

Version: 1.0

Annoyingware, but forgiven

It does what it says and at very nice quality. What it lacks is mere annoyances that result from lack of some basic features and inability to save default settings. For example, when it's started, it always comes up (cannot start minimised), and it always starts in PC-to-Phone mode, which is really cheap, but not free. It also starts up a web page that simply tells you that community chat has been discontinued (used to be an auto-signin page). When searching for other users, the result list is fixed at a 50 maximum and the user cannot choose how the list is sorted. Also, this software will require an enhanced Full-duplex (separate record and playback mixer controls: eg. Sound Blaster Live) for smooth operation. It will function on more primitive full duplex cards, but one or both users may recieve an echo. Half duplex operation is not supported. Unconfirmed at the moment- it may have caused interference with my FTP server while in PC-to-PC chat. I forgive the small annoyances in this software because it is version 1.0, it does have an effective central server-based call system, so you don't need to know the person youre trying to contact's IP, and the voice quality is very good. I was able for a short time to make the voice break up, but it took a solid bandwidth crunch and a heavy processor load (virus scan) to do it. I does as it advertizes, simply needs to be made more user friendly.

Link Maven

Version: 2.0

Dude, Kicks Asbestos!

Pros: Simple interface, Easy to figure out. File transfers are solid as a rock; If the connections drops, Link Maven will automatically renogotiate the connection and resume the file transfer.

Cons: Interface shows files and directories together in the same window tree style (KDE like); Some may like that, but I don't.

It -sometimes- crashes when initalizing a file transfer from remote computer to local; Recovery will require the three finger salute, and resuming as client may require a reboot.

Uses a separate server program, which means only the client computer controls the connection.

Parallel Port transfers only.
