The Font Thing

Version: 0.8

Great, simple font browser, simplifies the search for an appropriate font.

Pros: Able to preview fonts in the text and size of your choice, with multiple font types at once. You can also quickly look at all characters of a particular font, with their keys and shortcuts.

Simple and easy interface, this is good as multiple fonts create a lot of clutter so no fancy interface is necessary.

Cons: If you have a font archive that's fairly huge - say, a couple of thousand, I wouldn't recommend this program. Because, when you open TFT up, it automatically creates a list of all available fonts and their previews, which can easily crash the program if it's crunching through thousands. With smaller amounts though, this is an excellent tool.

WordWeb

Version: 4.5a

Everything you need

Pros: This has to be the best, most compact, yet comprehensive dictionary/thesaurus tool I've ever used. It should come with every computer!

The most useful features for me are the variations on a word you look up. For example - 'Type of', 'Types' and 'Synonyms' are seperate tabs with a wealth of information relating to the word you've requested.

KeyWallet

Version: 1.0

Okay if you rarely use your passwords

Pros: Drag and drop of details into web text boxes is very handy.

Cons: - The process of adding a new password entry is way too long, and the screens it goes through could just as easily be combined as one.

- When dragging and dropping from the KW screen to a web form, it minimises itself, so you have to open it again to get multiple things, such as a username, then a password. Very annoying when doing this often.

- The Close (X) button, unlike many other small applications, actually closes the program. I'm so used to it just minimising such apps to the taskbar that I have to keep launching it.

- There is no way to group similar keys together. So I have to search through them all.

- You have to double-click on the tray icon to open it. I think one click is sufficient.

- Interface uses too much space and the buttons are not easy to interpret.

All up, I am mostly just frustrated at how time consuming it is to use this program. It should just be quick and easy with no hassles, nothing too complicated.

WordWeb

Version: 4.01

Accurate, unobtrusive, easy to use

Pros: This is the most accurate desktop dictionary/thesaurus I've used to date - better than Nobe SpellExpress by far. It even gives details on the related words. For example, if you search for alternatives to "engine", it gives words that may be parts of this term, like "camshaft", "fender", "gear", and so on.

And all this in neatly arrange tabs, inside an easy interface.

All information for one search - dictionary, thesaurus, etc., is all displayed in one go, so there's no need to switch between different types.

This takes a lot of work out of searching an online thesaurus for me.

Cons: Working in creative areas myself, I'd like the logo and look of the program to be a little more savvy and not so Win3.1, but the pros definitely outweigh this con.

Color Schemer Studio

Version: 1.5

The best yet, perfect for colour schemes

Pros: Fantastic colour wheel and schemes make blending and matching colours very easy and enjoyable.

Program interface presents immediately with colour matching, no nonsense, not overly complicated but still full of great tools.

The best colour picker I've come across.

Better even than ColorPic.
