TerraWars NY Invasion

Version: 9.02DL

Meh...

Pros: Well... it ran, does that count as a pro?

Cons: Some games use good gameplay and storyline as a excuse for bad graphics, this is not one of them...

I was surprised how long it took to install the game “and uninstall” considering the graphical quality, they must of used bad compression or something because I have had 4 gig games install quicker than this.

The publishers description gave more information on the plot than the game itself, you're just thrown into it with no introduction. Once you survive the first onslaught of aliens it doesn't really get much better as fights will often consist of aliens randomly appearing from nowhere and run around a bit until one of you are dead. The environments are not that much better either, invisible walls stopping you from walking into restricted area's don't sit well for today's realism standards.

The official website didn't say much about the age of the company but looking at this I imagine they are pretty new. They would have been better off showing some nifty screenshots and good PR than releasing a demo which allowed people to see the game for what it really is, I doubt people will seriously buy this game unless it is in the bargain bin. I only gave it a rating of 2 because I have seen worse quality games, at least they put the time and effort into getting it to run well and bug free.

Night Watch demo

Good but needs some work

Pros: The game was pretty fun, there needs to be more modern titles as medieval/sci fi RPGs are getting a little over used these days. I am also glad to see a PC RPG that implements turn based strategy instead of gut reaction combat, normally you only see this in 2D games like Arcanum and Fallout.

Overall a pretty unique and entertaining title.

Cons: Dang this game is in need of some heavy optimising, ran bad on a 7800GT and was still pretty jaggie at 1600x1200. I bumped AA to 8x as well but the performance hit was pretty bad, before I consider buying this game I want to know if I have to max out my settings just to remove 'some' of the jaggies.

The 3rd level felt a little empty, it kept throwing fights at you to keep you busey which makes the level feel rushed. It is a pretty small area so I can see how they couldn't fit too much content into it but I hope such levels don't appear frequently.

There was also this bug that occurred when you was being knocked back by wolf enemies, distance seems to be ignored in mid flight/rolling allowing them to perform melee attacks over great distances. Finally the only other thing that bothered me was the god awful voice acting by that old NPC at the train station, the face and voice just don't mix. I don't mind if it is a one off but stuff like that can put you off.

3DMark2001

Version: 1.0

Everyone should have it!

Pros: If your looking to test your PC performance against some of your favorit oldies that still give the modern PC a run for its money I can't recommend this enough! Not only is this entertaining but it gives you a clear view of what your computer is capable of, it may not have the flash and glory of the 03 and 05 versions but it still boasts graphics most games use that will leave you in awe such as the nature scene. Also unlike the 03/05 version this benchmark is berly restricted so contains all the visual content, the very specific testing options are still disabled so its still worth purchasing but if you just enjoy computer eye candy the restricted version is all you need. I'd recommend this for anyone who wants to test their computer for gaming but doesn't have razor edge hardware or for anyone who just enjoys 3D graphic demonstrations.

If you want a additional pixel shader test be sure to check out the futuremark website for 3dmark 2001 SE which is also a free download.

Cons: Cannot really think of any problems other than Futuremark should of given more insentive to purchase the program as it provides allot even with its restrictions.

Restricted Area demo

Like a cross between Diablo 2 and Deus Ex

Pros: The graphics are excellent, very high quality for a 2D game. Voice acting is suitable for its purpose and the atmosphere is perfect for the world that it is set in, the majority of weapons are guns but the various sound effects and attack animations keep it from getting repetitive. Combat is Diablo 2 style with hoards of enemies coming at you from all directions so you are kept on your toes otherwise you will die easily from the hard hitters. A definite recommendation for those into dark science fiction.

Cons: First thing that hit me was how sudden the intro movie ended, it would have been better to see the main character walk away and fade into the game rather than a suddenly freeze and stop. I hope the game is not always like this as it can damage the atmosphere. Towns were also a little dead, maybe there are more lively areas in the full version but a few wandering none interactive NPCs and rotating dialogue on the main characters regarding the world would liven it up a bit.

Enemies could have been made more interesting, instead of running around until you or they were dead it would have been nice to see some creativity in combat such as actions other than just relentlessly trying to whack the player. Maybe some monsters could spit acid as well as their normal attack? Intelligent enemies throw a grenade every now and then? Enemy cooperation? Not asking for military grade AI here but making enemies do more than one attack animation over and over again would spice things up.

I of the Dragon

Looks good

I didin't realy get a chance to test it properly due to my pcs current problems but it looks like a good game and a must for dragon fans. The only thing that botherd me was the voice effects, that guy on the carpet you meet at the beginning of the game sounds computer generated.
