R-Wipe & Clean

Version: 6

Excellent

Pros: Finally, a cleaner & secure file deletion program that does the job without geting your computer all out of whack. I installed this puppy (version 7.0.1273) and ran it with my fingers crossed, a prayer, and a Norton Ghost image backup at my side just case. It worked great. I ditched my CCleaner 1.36 and Eraser 5.7 because this does the job of both and it's more through. It actually made my computer run a little faster. It completely removes all traces of your computer activity. Selected files and folders and items in the recycle bin (also directly from Windows Explorer). Temporary internet files. Cookies (with an option to keep the cookies you want). Temporary system files. History of visited web pages. Autocomplete text and passwords on web pages. Recent documents history. Delete links to and MRU's files opened by MS Office and standard windows applications with the added benefit that applications you have installed are detected automatically. Safely wipes unused space on drives. It safely wipes swap/paging files. It deletes files so that they cannot be recovered and you can select from five wiping algorithms: Zeros, Psuedo-random, DoD 3, DoD 7, and Gutman 35. You can create your own special template lists of specific files to wipe. You can also define custom jobs of files and/or folders to be wiped, and optionally schedule the tasks to run automatically. You can schedule wipes to happen at user logon, system startup, when a browser is closed, etc. It has everything I ever wanted in a cleaner and secure file deletion program. Outstanding.

Cons: Caveat: make sure you uncheck the box next to "Stored Explorer View Settings" or any special view settings you may have set up in certain directories or folders (view by thumbnails or tiles or icons or list or details) will revert back to the default Windows system setting.

It also takes three clicks to run a wipe. I wish it could be done with just one click. But that's no big inconvenience and I can live with that.

Window Washer

Version: 6.0.2.411

It Got My Computer All Out Of Whack

Pros: None (see below)

Cons: Avoid Window Washer like the plague! I'd figured I'd give Window Washer a try because of all the useful features it supposedly has. After I installed it, my computer froze up and I had to restart it using the restart button. After it booted up, windows said it found new hardware, my quick launch with all it's programs was missing, items were missing from the task bar, my desktop icons were all askew, the font type and size was all changed system wide, error messages appeared when starting some programs up, and God knows what else. I had to do a disk image restore using Norton Ghost to get my computer back to the way I had it. The people over at webrot should be totured for doing this to me!

WebWasher

Version: 2.1.1

It Got My Computer All Out Of Whack

Pros: None (see below)

Cons: I'd figured I give this a try because of all the useful cleanup features it supposedly has. After I ran it it, my computer froze up. Had to restart using the restart button. When it booted back up, my quick launch was gone, items were missing from my task bar, my desktop icons were all askew, the text size and font were all changed system wide, some of my programs got error messages before starting, and God knows what else. I'm going to have to do a Norton Ghost image restore now. Avoid Window Washer at all costs! Those people at Webroot should be tortured!

FreeWire

Version: 3.2.3

Whole Lotta Spyware GOing On

I downloaded this because I wanted an alternative to Ares (not as many users as Gnutella). The first sign that something was wrong was my firewall kept giving me alerts that all kinds of applications kept trying to communicate inbound & outbound to & from the net. So I ran an Ad-aware scan and it found it loaded 65 known spyware objects! I cleaned them all out & re-booted, and it kept trying to load a bs3.dll using rundll32.exe as a startup command! I removed this from startup, and I finally got my PC back to the way I had it after about an hour's work. Freewire still runs but ok without the spyware but it's a pain to find a download that completes and I have cable! I'll keep it for awhile just to have more download options but I'll stick with Ares as my main P2P. It's 100% better.
