Safari

Version: 3.1.1

It's OK, but there are better browsers out there

Pros: When this browser was first offered as a beta, I remember it was horrible. I uninstalled it the same day I installed. With this release, v3.1.1, Safari has come a long way. It uses little system memory resources. It is a nice browser for those looking for a fresh new look. Pages load quickly, same as IE7 and Firefox 2.It has been very stable, no crashes. So far it has opened all pages I normally load with IE7 & Firefox. I am finding myself using this browser more often than Firefox and Opera, although I still keep IE7 as my default browser. However, anyone who truly gives this browser a good try, I think will find it worthy of having as an alternative to the other better known browsers.

Foxit PDF Reader

Version: 2.3 build 2923

Amazingly fast and light on resources!

Pros: For years I have been using Acrobat Reader. But as many others have stated, it is undoubtedly a memory hog and takes too long to load. Donm't get me wrong, I like Acrobat Reader, in fact, I own the standard "paid" version for other things the reader can't do, but once I found Foxit Reader, it was love at first sight. It is quick (faster than a speeding bullet) and the layout is simply awesome =D ... If all you need is a reader, I strongly suggest you give this baby a try. You will not be disappointed.

Cons: I wish I could edit PDF documents. But for that you would need to get the "paid" version.

Mozilla Firefox

Version: 2.0.0.7

Nice browser but not impressed

Pros: For anyone looking for a refreshed browser interface, this may be enough reason to please that someone.

Cons: This version was slower in loading pages, compared to previous versions. I cleared cache on both Firefox and IE7. Loaded same pages to compare. IE7 was way much faster. I'm sticking with IE7. I know Firefox is working on a new version (now in beta) so I'll wait to try that one when it releases the final product.

Opera

Version: 9.5

"Very good" but not "Excellent"

Pros: Loads fast. Easy on memmory resources (better than IE7 and Firefox). The Wand utility and Speed Dial features are excellent. Overall, this is a nice browser to have in any PC as an alternate but certainly not as my default browser.

Cons: Some of the pages I visit often do not display properly or at all in this browser. It's a shame.

AVG Anti-Virus

Version: 8.0.81

Nice GUI, Good Protection, but slows systems to almost a halt

Pros: Nice GUI. Many types of protection all bundled up. The scans are just as fast as AVG 7.5 free edition. The subscription cost is reasonable.

Cons: Unfortunately, I found that AVG Internet Suite 8.0 slowed down my new Windows Vista Home Premium system significantly. It definetely uses more system resources and often takes too long for web pages to load up. I uninstalled it and installed it on my wife's "dual core" Windows Vista Home Premium laptop. Within a day she complained of her laptop running slow as well. I gave it another try by installing it on my Windows XP Home edition SP2 system which is older running on a AMD 1800+ CPU with 2GB memory. AVG 8.0 totally crippled this one. It slowed it down so much that even after I uninstalled it, it permanently left my XP running extremely slow. I ended up having to erase the entire drive and re-install Windows XP. I did the same for the laptop. I went back to installing AVG 7.5 free edition which for years has protected my PCs and have caught all viruses. I just thought it was a good oportunity to give a newer version a try. I'm disaapointed it did not work for me.
