SnoopFree Privacy Shield

Version: 1.0.5

Works great and gives an air of security and safety.

Pros: Although I've only used it for 3 days, I feel really good about this program. It works very well with a completely intuitive interface. Upon install and reboot, it immediately detected that I had two keyboard hooks running on my computer. Of course, both of them were related to the "special" keys on my Logitech keyboard; but it found them and identified what they were so I was able to add them to the exception list very easily.

It adds a level of comfort and security to my online banking and shopping I didn't have before. I will be installing some key loggers myself in the next week to test it out; but so far, so awesome.

Cons: I would like the ability to export and import exception lists. If I build a list of excused programs and files, I would like to easily add that list to other computers that have SnoopFree installed so no one will ever see the initial warning window.

I have a few friends and relatives that combine a lack of computer savvy with an intense paranoia and would end up blocking everything that popped up (and then calling me for tech support, *sigh*).

Grocery List Generator

Version: 1.3.1

Generates a grocery list alright

Pros: Does exactly what it says it'll do.

Comes pre-loaded with basic list and some dishes, you can add as many others as you want.

Cons: Could be more intuitive; but I figured out how to use all features of the program in less than 15 minutes, so it's not a big deal.

Color Capture

Version: 1.2

Easy, portable, but a little too big.

Pros: This program is very simple to use: point to a pixel (you get a nice preview of the pixel to which you're pointing in the Color Capture window) and press Ctrl-Enter to get the HTML (hex) color value of the pixel. Want RGB? Then convert the HTML values from hex to decimal. Don't know how to do that? Then use a different program. I think ColorDetector displays RGB.

It is very portable, only one file. There are no libraries or installation, just run the EXE and you're grabbing pixel colors.

Cons: Color Capture does not display RGB values. Sure, you can simply convert the hexadecimal values to decimal; but that's a better argument for why it should be included in the program - it's a simple conversion.

I also don't like the size of the program. It's too big! After unzipping the file, it is 483 KB. I know 483 KB is not very large when you're putting it on a 2 GB flash drive (small by today's comparisons); but I'd like to see this functionality in less space than half-a-megabyte.

Notepad2

Version: 1.0.12

I have permanently replaced Notepad with Notepad2

Pros: Syntax highlighting is what makes this little app so invaluable for me. You can quickly scan configuration files thanks to the header highlighting; and having something I can run from a flash drive to edit script files on different computers has been wonderful. I have replaced the default Notepad on my system with Notepad2.

Cons: Not really a complaint, just something for you to keep in mind: Syntax highlighting is not good enough to replace higher-end code editors for serious programmers.

Floppy Image

Version: 2.4

Great for making exact copies of floppies

Pros: Very easy to use. Lots of options for creating an image file, even self-extracting EXE files, with space for putting License Agreement text and set up instructions. You can even load a bitmap to put your logo or any picture on the start screens. If all you want to is create images of your floppy disks that can be easily distributed, this program works great.

Cons: Almost every time, unless I formatted the floppy disk first, loading an image onto a floppy left the diskette unreadable on other computers. If I set the option to always format the diskette before writing to it, it would work fine in other computers.

Viewing the contents of an image file is not supported. You can't extract individual files or overwrite individual files in the image to modify the floppy image. You have to use a program like WinImage for that functionality.

Also, I was able to use WinImage to open .img files created by Floppy Image, but was not able to use Floppy Image to open .img files created by WinImage. If you want more flexibility with and exposure to the contents of your floppy image files, Floppy Image is not the tool for you.
