Intuitive! Someone at HACE Software was thinking up good things...

Pros: I'm a bit anal retentive about my computer. I hate it when core functionality (such as context sensitive menu items) lies out of my reach without any extent of expediency, yet every application installer under the sun modifies this aspect of the OS. I began looking for a way to streamline this outta control nuisance - I know exactly how I want my workstation to perform. Google ***** near failed me. I ran across tons of registry ?hacks? but nothing very intuitive or that I could pass on to grandma. This app, though, when used in conjunction with Folder Options / File Types, permits users to configure every visible aspect of their context menus (this app) in XP along with the handlers for "Edit," "Preview," et al. Worth a try.

Cons: Too colorful for my tastes.

ZoneAlarm Pro

Version: 6.1.737

Why only three stars? It's getting more bloated.

Pros: - Blanket security protection. Some people prefer this.

- Great alternative to its competition.

- Security that works. Great for mission critical machines and drives containing sensitive data.

As I've stated in an earlier review for an earlier version, ZoneAlarm has abandoned their simple, stout firewall application to go the way of Norton: Trying to be everything to everyone. This multifaceted approach to security will obviously compromise the integrity of ZoneAlarm's core function... being a solid and efficient FIREWALL.

With that said, though, people who don't care for specialized security will appreciate the fact that ZoneAlarm is now a blanket security solution with plenty of features and options for customizability.

Besides the bloat, ZoneAlarm Pro is STILL one of the most efficient security suites in existence, given the nature of its much older and more branched out competitors.

Cons: - No 64-bit support. What the heck?

- ZoneAlarm Pro is too big. ZoneAlarm Basic is too small.

- Blanket security protection.

- Technical issues are still being addressed in the forums. The new version, at a glance, could still be in unofficial beta, but this is speculation.

DynDNS Updater

Version: 3.1.0.7

Compact, efficient, and utilitarian

Pros: I enjoy this application because it does the work I need it to do. It offers a very simple service with no gimmicks: Dynamic DNS. Kudos to the author.

Look at this before the more popular items...

Pros: This application is simple (though it requires you have .Net framework installed and updated), and it gets the job done. It does not overlook any positives and you can ask it to prompt before it cleans. When working on users' workstations with sloppy start menus (we all know them), this application will save quite a bit of time and afford you the ability to do a more professional job with their system.

Cons: It's easy. Too easy. A little configurability would have been nice. Then again, there isn't much that needs to be configured.

ZoneAlarm Pro

Version: 5.5.062.004

Started off strong, becoming bloatware, but still recommended

ZoneAlarm Pro, vastly more configurable than its free counterpart, ZoneAlarm, is still worth the purchase amount despite a looming problem or two I see in the product's immediate future and present. First, I'll focus on the positive: - This software truly makes your PC secure. It can be as noisy or as quiet as you'd like it to be. It can alert you to every little detail such as how your connection to the net is being used and what application is using it. Or, you can make ZoneAlarm Pro protect you silently. You won’t know it’s there, but it’ll do its job. - Relative to other security software, ZoneAlarm is still conservative with system resources, but this is quickly becoming not the case. - ZoneAlarm is highly configurable for experts and automated for dumb people. Since ZoneAlarm Pro is software, I find it more accessible and user friendly than a router web interface. And now, a quick negative note: Much to my chagrin, ZoneAlarm Pro is quickly becoming bloatware, as feature set after feature set are getting tacked onto the actual firewall application, making ZoneAlarm Pro more system intensive than earlier counterparts. Many of these features (like pop-up blocking, cache cleaning and a "security center") are redundant in what you'll find on browsers like Mozilla and even Internet Explorer with SP-2. ZoneLabs should stick to what they do best: make firewall applications. I'd rather see a lower price tag and a faster application than a one size fits all security application suite of redundant tools. It’s a shame ZoneLabs sees the need to sell out with their Pro version, although they still gladly give the basic but trustworthy ZoneAlarm application away for free. All in all, my review of ZoneAlarm Pro should be taken as positive… after all, I bought it myself.
