Spam Bully for Outlook Express

Version: 4.1.0.12

Good program but not worth the money

Pros: The interface is clean, it's integrated into OE, and it's easy to set up. The best part is the customer service and forum.

Cons: Too expensive. I bought the last version for $30. I was willing to upgrade, but the licenses they now sell expire after one year - you have to rent, rather than buy the program. Also, it uses resources with a service, and it has lots of bugs. Just check out their forums to get a sample. I agree with the other reviewer that it promotes very disruptive and poor practices such as bouncing email, using challenge/response systems, and bombing spammers. These all add the the networks already overloaded with spam-related garbage, and cause many an innocent victim to be bombed with e-mail or reported as a spammer. Most return addresses on spam are lifted from legitimate and innocent users. If you really need an integrated program, I'd recommend something like the free SpamBrave program. Better yet is the more complicated but highly configurable, effective, and free Spamihilator. There are lots programs that only charge once for their product, or are free to begin with. Try them instead, and stay away from bombing, reporting, and bouncing -- all of which just add to our misery.

RoboGEO

Version: 4.0.5

Excellent Program

Pros: Good interface for complex operations. Imports/exports many formats. Can be used to simply export a route/waypoints to gpx or directly to Google Earth, etc. or geotag a whole batch of pictures and include them as waypoints. Makes beautiful output in Google Earth. Also exports routes and pushpins to Microsofts Streets and Trips. On-line documentation is quite thorough and well written. Program is stable and easy to install/uninstall. No time limit on evaluation, but points are scrambled, the only limitation. I've looked at dozens of programs and tested all those I could, and I like this the best of all.

Cons: Price has gone up to $39.95 - but still worth it in my view. I'd prefer documentation on local computer rather than on web - though it's updated easier this way. Ability to plot just waypoints/routes/tracks without images is not clearly stated, though easy to do.

Spam Terrier

Version: 1

Weak filtering capability

Pros: It's well integrated and has a great interface. It's free and the parent company, Agnitum, is well established. The white and black lists work quite well, and it easily detects your contacts and people to whom you write and passes their mail as good.

Cons: The Bayesian filter really sucks. I trained it with 500 spam messages and as many good ones, and it still can't tell spam from good mail. It called everything spam until I decreased the aggressiveness of the filter. Now it freely allows words like viagra through, and even *****-based phrases don't trigger the spam filter. Hard as I try, I can't find a point where it allows mail through it is quite clearly not spam and stops spam that is blatant. This filter was the main reason I installed it and it's very disappointing. However, if all you need is white/black list capability then this program works well

Visual Communicator

Version: 2.0

It WAS good, but now it's Adobe.

Pros: I used this version for a few years. It works well, does what it claims, and is esy to use. The resulting videos are smooth and look great. The software USED to be relatively cheap at $189 and you USED to get support from Serious Magic.

Cons: It's way over priced now -- Adobe bought Serious Magic and now owns Visual Communicator. Now it's $399, i.e., more than twice as expensive, and from their web page, has essentially the same capability. As Adobe usually does, it adds a few small features, fixes a couple of bugs, and then offers an "upgrade" for $149. So if you paid $189 for version 2, you can "upgrade" for only $149. And you get the usual additional bugs and poor support tossed in for free! Welcome to Adobe. For $400 you'd be better off getting a full video editing suite to get more control and variety in your videos.

Spamihilator

Version: 0.9.9.10

Best of breed for this kind of anti-spam program

Pros: It's very configurable, many plug-ins are available, the Bayesian filter is superb and learns fast, it's easy to review and manage spam/nonspam, and it's easy to add words to filter, entries to white/black lists, and you can arrange the order of the filters, etc. It also works with SSL secure mail transfer, and you can cross-protocol IMAP to POP and use a simple client to check IMAP mail. The forums are in both German and English, and are quite active, with the developers monitoring them regularly. All this in a free program! After you've used it awhile and set it to suit your habits, it becomes nearly invisible and you only need to check the spam area occasionally to be sure a friend didn't end up there. Though some would say if he did, he should probably stay there because of what he sent you.

Cons: It's capabilities also bring complexity. It may require a work to set it up for some systems if the auto-configuration utility doesn't work for your system. (There is plenty of documentation for this, however.) Also, it's not integrated into your email client, but runs in the background as a separate program, intercepting incoming mail. This makes it compatible with most clients, but again, not really part of your client.
