Plato DVD Ripper

Version: 6.66

Product is listed a free on Download.com when it should be listed as free to try

Cons: This product is listed under the free category at download.com. It is really just a trial version. It seems unlikely that this is an honest mistake.

AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition

Version: 8.0.1

Avoid version 8 if you have a Pentium 4 or slower computer

Pros: I have always been a huge AVG fan, but no more.

Cons: First there was the annoying pop-up ad that told you that the software would expire on May 31. It was just as annoying as any other popup ad produced by spyware.

My big objection is how much of a resource hog this program is. I have this program installed on several computers. On a Core 2 Duo it does fine. On a Pentium 4 (2.4Ghz) I can see the slowing caused by the program. And on an AMD 2100+ this program slows the computer to a snail's pace.

Why did they have to mess this up so badly. I know that they are following in the footsteps of previously great free programs that have become so bloated as to be not worth using. Think Zone Alarm as an example.

RealPopup

Version: 2.6 build 167

This is an awesome program.

Pros: How many other programs do you see on download.com that have as many legitmate 5-star reviews.

Usually when all the reviews for some software are all so positive, I immediately know that the producer of the software has been reviewing his own product. That's not the case here. This product deserves it's 5-star rating.

This program allows for the easy sending of messages in a small network. It doesn't try to be everything to everyone. As a network administrator, I've used it in a small LAN (25 people) for the last 5 years. And it does the job perfectly. Think of it as a replacement for the 1 minute call to a work buddy at the other end of the building.

Perfect!

Cons: What more could you want. It's designed to be a replacement for winpopup. It does that exceedingly well.

iComment Button for Internet Explorer & Firefox

Version: 1.0.10

Shame on any company that submits reviews on their own products.

Pros: I won't download anything when the company writes favorable reviews of their own product. They think we are so stupid that we won't spot it.

Cons: I absolutely hate it when companies stuff the ballot box by writing favorable reviews of their own product. In this case they made so many mistakes. Some companies really do a good job stuffing the ballot box, but these guys did a lousy job.

For starters, at the time of the writing of this review, this product has less than 100 downloads and 7 comments. I did some looking around and typically products on download.com have 1 comment for somewhere between every 1000 and every 10000 downloads. I saw one product on download.com that had over 500,000 downloads and only 7 comments.

Ask yourself how likely it is that 7 people out of 100 would have commented on this product (almost all very favorable, by the way) when another product gets 7 comments out of 500,000 downloads.

MAPILab Rules for Exchange

Version: 2

Product did not work. Extremely poor technical support

Pros: The product was very easy to install. The rules were very easy to configure. Management was very simple through Microsoft Exchange system attendant.

Cons: The product did not work for me. Every time a rule would trigger, it would generate two error messages in the error log.

Their tech support people were nice, but did not provide useful assistance in solving the problems. It would take a day or two for a reply, and each reply provide only a little bit of useful information.

I'm sure if the product works in your application then you will be happy with it, but if you have any prolems it appears that you can't rely on their tech support at all.
