Internet Explorer

Version: 7

They took five years to give us this...?

Pros: Updated interface, fast, more secure than earlier version.

Cons: Not entirely stable, even now that it's no longer in beta. Doesn't play nice with some web sites that are IE "optimized", or utilities like Gmail Notifier or Yahoo mail. Still not W3C standards compliant.

Too little, too late, but hey... At least MS woke up from a loooooong time asleep at the wheel.

Internet Explorer 7

Version: SP2 Beta 2 build 5346

Nice, but beta is still a little flakey...

Pros: IE7 is improved in a lot of ways: more secure, more options, new interface, and very fast. Phishing detector is a good idea, and the RSS reader too.

Cons: A little unpredictable at times. Seems to block too many cookies sometimes, making you repeatedly log onto some sites, even when set to "remember" your login and password. Same goes for the window/tab settings. Set it to open input from other programs in a new tab, and sometimes it works, but other times it doesn't.

Not likely to make Firefox fans give it up, so a lot of us are still going to be stuck using two browsers. (Firefox or Opera for security and features, IE to access the sites that force us to use ActiveX or other IE-only features.)

Media Player Classic

Version: 6.4.9

A single player for almost everything.

Pros: Media Player Classic handles just about any media file you throw at it, including Quicktime and Real Media when the proper codec packs are installed.

I dumped the DVD software that came with my PC, Real Player, and Quicktime Player in favor of MPC. Now one small and simple player does what used to take three bloated ones.

Cons: Not the greatest for playing CDs... No CDDB or FreeDB link for track titles or info, and it has the annoying habit of pausing for a couple of seconds between tracks. Not many playlist options.

Mozilla Firefox

Version: 2.0.0.11

Just O.K., and incredibly over-hyped.

Pros: Simple and attractive user interface, relatively compact download, and fast and easy to install.

Cons: Not W3C compliant. (Version 3 supposedly will be). Printing results are very poor. Un-installer leaves all sorts of junk behind. Not very fast. Has been a memory hog from the beginning. Third party add-ons require separate download and setup, and most often quit working when the browser is upgraded to a new version.

Just being "not IE" is no longer enough. Mozilla needs to fix Firefox's longstanding bugs and shortcomings. Otherwise, there isn't going to be a compelling reason for IE or Safari users to bother with it.

Nvu

Version: 1.0

this one's just right...

Pros: For my purposes, Dreamweaver or FrontPage are overkill. I don't want or need all the bells and whistles they offer, but I don't always want to use Notepad or "code-based" editors either.

Nvu provides just the tools I need, without all the extraneous junk that I don't. That makes it easier to use, and keeps it from sucking up all my PC's memory and disk space.

Cons: Don't expect it, or any WYSIWYG editor for that matter, to generate code that is as streamlined as one can "hand-code" with a text editor.
