SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition

Version: 3.8.1002

Unsure about how good it is

Pros: Seems from other people's reviews that this is highly rated by them. I've had it since the end of January '07, friends tell me that it is good, but...... see cons

Cons: Maybe it's because I have several similar programs that I have had for years and trust, or that I'm lucky, but despite running this program quite a bit it's never found anything on my computer that it didn't think should be there. The scans seem to take a long time, on a par with A-squared Free on a deep scan, I know this may be because it's a thorough scan, but it hasn't even come up with 1 baddie.

Winamp

Version: 5.53

unspecified enhancements

Pros: I've had this program for years and had used it as my No. 1 player for most of that time, but now I'm going to use something else.

Cons: The 'unspecified enhancements' mean in my case that I get stuck with the 'classic' skin, I really don't like that one, I tried uninstalling it, re-installing 5.53 and all I get is the 'classic'. I tried downloading the set up file again, from the homepage, no difference made. There are no options in the installation process or preferences to change the skin, I was quite happy with Winamp in it's 'modern' skin that I've had for some time, I was quite happy with Winamp as I've used it for about 6 years now. This update with it's 'unspecified enhancements' gives me an extra box to uncheck on install because I don't want the toolbar/tell everyone online that I have winamp and am not playing any music currently because I can't get the skin I want add-on and no choice on skins. If this update has fixed some bugs, all well and good, they were bugs that I didn't know that it had, but I do know that this update is buggy.

I understand that free programs will go looking for 'sponsors' to pay for their continued updating, but just give me back the option of a minor skin change, please? I'm using XP Pro on a custom built PC.

EverNote

Version: 2.0.0.261

I've found this really useful

Pros: Easy to learn how to use, it saves new notes automatically, far more flexible than something like notepad, I use it as I would a pad on my desk, keeping links, quotes, cut and paste website articles/excerpts that I came across so as I can access them later on for work I am doing, virtually instant access to any notes you wish to make. Very easy to remove any notes too.

Cons: None so far, not that many bells and whistles if you're looking for an all dancing, all singing application, but I wanted something fairly simple with some flexibility, and this suits me fine as it is.

MoreTunes

Version: 2.02

Good source for additional track info

Pros: Still playing with it, will reserve judgment on it until had more time, seems OK, some limitations on which players it works with, but for those that are compatible it makes finding info on more popular artists easier, more obscure acts may be a lot harder to find additional info/tags on using this software.

Cons: There is a 2.04 version, for free(Windows only) at freewaregenius DOT com

AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition

Version: 8.0.1

Email scanner only available for 30 days

Pros: I've been a long time user of AVG Free, from well before Cnet had it on their site and I asked many times why it was not here. I've always found it to be a very good anti-vir, it's almost always caught bugs that have sneaked past my anti-spyware defences, the few that did get past were bugs that more specialist progs like TrojanHunter managed to deal with. So I've been happy with this great free anti-vir, until NOW....

Cons: ....the fact that the email scanner is only available for 30 days for free is enough to make me look at alternatives and to drop this program's rating right down to 1 star. So many bugs can arrive via email that less security conscious people may send, often inadvertently, that it's not worth having this big hole in my defences. I've gone back to ver 7.5 and will check out avast or avira again as my free anti-vir applications. The sooner the better as I'm getting really fed up with the pop up from AVG that came in with 7.5's last update, another move on AVG's part that's losing them a long time user and advocate of their products.
