ccleaner is free

Pros: this application is free. this newest version is an improvement. it's registry cleaner is improved, and so is it's abilty to better interact with ie7. i've turned on many, people to this app. and no spyware scanner or any malware scanner has ever flagged this program. it is one of the very finest free offerings on this site. don't be mislead. i wouldn't install the yahoo toolbar personally. but i'll bet the offering of installing the yahoo toolbar is what enables ccleaner to be offered for free. when i see a misleading review for such a well known and trusted program, i'm stuck with believing the reviewer has a hidden agenda.

Cons: none...... one of the best programs of it's kind. free or paid.

Pros: not only gets rid of any malware, it can rid your machine of remnants of any program you no longer want. provided you understand what you're doing. if you aren't sure, go to a forum for help. with patience it will knock out most any problem you'll encounter.

Cons: it takes a fair amount of knowledge to use it properly. but it's free, and many forums exist to help you root out your problems safely.

right direction

Pros: it's a step in the right direction. i know it's problematic on some machines. to the novices, it's best to disable all security software while installing. and no third pasrty apps of any kind running active.

Cons: no, it's still not as good as opera or firefox. but it is more secure, give microsoft a break folks. they don't claim to make the best web browser. and if stopping all third party apps bothers you, sorry but that's how it will always be changing that much code. as a software man, with many friends that write software (strictly proprietary) every one of them runs the os newly reformatted with no 3rd party apps on the machine. just helps eliminate potential conflicts. we'll still use opera/firfox mostly. but this is fine for certain things, like updating windows. my point is i know of no other company with the power or resources the size of microsoft, that is more reasonable.

still solid

Pros: avg has been a staple in the av business for quite some time. it's a strong alternative to paid versions. it has it's weaknesses but so does any av program. avg has proven once again, free programs can get the job done. it's no wonder it's been downloaded almost 12 million times from this site alone. a modest improvement from past version. as long as vendors like grisoft offer these programs for free. there can be no excuse for not having an av scanner. low resource uage, and get's along well with almost all third party software.

Cons: limited support options, but many paid for products offer as little support....... so not a big deal.

AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition

pretty good

Pros: free, reliable, low resource usage. this version is the best to date.

Cons: no cons really, but i must say that avast free has eclipsed avg. it's smoother with vista, scans more thoroughly (if proprly set up) and has a web shield. not knocking avg, giving credit where it's due.
