Webroot Spy Sweeper

Version: 5.5

Does not play well with others

Pros: Nice UI. Fairly quick but comprehensive scans. Shields pro-actively protect key system areas. Reasonable price if you shop around.

Cons: RAM footprint is OK but CPU usage for me was high. I installed it as backup to for KIS 7. They are not compatible. Real problems particularly at start up. Tried to tun it to 'on demand' only but regardless of settings it tries place a start up entry in the registry after each scan and reactivates the shields whether you want them or not.. Tried to find alternative combination that might work. It does not get along with any of the main security suites. The shields are looking to do the same job as the security suites. If you use stand alone AV, firewall etc it would probably be a decent app.

ESET Smart Security

Version: 3.0.642

Not quite ready yet

Pros: AV is extremely good. Footprint is very light. I could not believe how quickly programmes were opening and web pages rendering. Simple enough UI. Scans OK for timings and anti-spam is good. However excellent performance seems to come at a price.

Cons: Firewall needs work. Not as configurable as you might expect. The 'interactive' mode allows you to select what applications connect to the network but it's all or nothing. You don't seem to be able to allow certain processes of an application such as auto update etc only. The whole product especially Anti Spy seems to allow everything until it causes a threat. I like to decide what comes in and out of my PC and expect security software to alert me to potential as well as actual threats. It does not appear to alert you to changes in the start up options etc.

I genuinely hope it gets better as the AV is great and low footprint a real bonus but at the moment the concerns about the firewall and anti spy outweigh performance gains. For now I'll stick with KIS 7. PS uninstal was a nightmare. Stalled halfway through. Had to reinstall then remove with help of Revo.

Comodo Firewall Pro

Version: 3.0.25.378

Very good but there are better

Pros: Excellent HIPs/Firewall based protection. If you are sure your PC is malware free Learning mode and Clean PC mode will cut down pop-ups in the early days before increasing the security settings. It's a very powerful programme for being free.

Cons: Lots of choices/configurations that may confuse some. Pop-ups are not as clear as they could be and most users won't know the correct decisions anyway. Online Armor is better for advanced users and Sygate for those who are not. The new IE/Firefox toolbar is nothing more than spyware in my book.

ThreatFire AntiVirus Free Edition

Version: 3.0.8

Did nothing for me

Pros: Free and allegedly bolsters you AV against zero day attacks. I prefer PITA HIPs or anti-executable product as at least I know it's working. If you like your security lite and quiet this might be for you.

Cons: Can't think of anything as it did not block any behaviour on my system for a number of weeks I just thought what was the point of it taking up resources if it was not doing anything

Mamutu

Version: 1.6.0.11

Good but too expensive

Pros: Best of the behaviour blockers I have used. Nice GUI, informative messages and good support if required. Community based advice or decisions are good as its a fairly large community

Cons: Too expensive when you consider some of the alternatives are free. You nee to register for the free trial.
