The Finger

Version: 1.00

Trojan Virus?

Pros: Sounds funny, love the idea

Cons: Just found this through CNet's April Fools email. Upon downloading, Avast flagged it as having a Trojan in it, so I stopped there. Could be a false positive I don't know - but don't see why this app should have anything of the kind. Proceed with caution.

Ares Fileshare

Version: 1.1

Bad Program

Pros: Connects to the network quite fast but only sometimes, and when it works, has an excellent selection of files for download. Low on system resources and easy to use. Also does not force you to share.

Cons: The existing Ares Galaxy (aresgalaxy.org) is much better. The first time I used this program, it connected to the network quickly, but had 0 users, 0 files, and did not find anything on any search term.

The second time it worked fine, so it obviously doesn't always even connect properly. I also noticed the serious lack of features. You can't even choose which type of file to search for.

The only one thing I think is better than the original Ares Galaxy is the fact that you can do multiple searches. It lacks in-built media player functions, functions to choose which type of file to search for, and other would-be-useful features.

The network is good, but this program is poor, get Ares Galaxy or Limewire instead

UltraEdit-32

Version: 12.2

Fantastic Editor

Pros: There's only a few reasons I use Dreamweaver, and that is for site management - easy access to all files on the site, with integrated FTP, and extras like Mass Find & Replace on multiple files. Now I've finally found an alternative!

I was able to quickly download this 8mb program, install it within a minute, and create a new 'Project'. I made an FTP account, and linked that to the folder where I store my website locally. Now I can easily edit any file on the site, then right click --> upload when done.

UltraEdit-32 also provides all the functions I need for mass find & replacing code in my files, easy to read & edit syntax highlighting colours, and tons of other options which you would expect from an editor like this.

I shouldn't compare to dreamweaver as that is a full-featured WYSIWYG package, but previously that was the only program I could use to easily edit lots of files on my site at once. Now I can use UltraEdit, at a MUCH lower price and with much less bloat. The extra features in this make my work so much easier than with other text editors. All the options are very daunting at first, but take out time to configure it to your needs, edit settings etc & you'll love it. The free trial is 45 days long! Once that's up I will probably buy it. A fantastic editor for coders. Check out their site for a full feature list.

Cons: Lots of features which to me seem unnecessary, and that I have no idea what they do. Very daunting to look at at first and not at all friendly. However, it was easy to customise the toolbars to add just those I need, and remove the others. Everything is customisable, even the keyboard shortcuts. Now it's perfect for my needs.

No WYSIWYG, but I don't use that anyway - hate the things. This is a program for text/code editing.

RAM usage seems a little high, but it's not causing any problems for me speed-wise.

Adobe Reader

Version: 7.0.8

Talk about bloat

Pros: It does read PDF files

Cons: Why is this program 16.4MB? When I had it installed it used up 60MB on my PC! What for!?!? I've never bothered to try to work out what use it's special functions are for the average PC user... all I know is that for opening PDF's, you should download a PDF Reader, not Adobe Reader. It is well known that with each new release of Adobe it gets fatter, slower, and persistantly bugs you to download more and more updates. Updates for what? Why? I use Foxit Reader. It is a 1MB download! You don't even have to install it. Foxit will open any PDF documents and allow you to view it very easily, with a nice clean interface, in a matter of seconds. Adobe can take minutes to load on slow machines, is full of bloat, uses way too much RAM, and is a massive download for what should be a small & simple program. It's a shame that PDF format has become Adobe format. Most people aren't aware that there are alternatives. I'd strongly recommend you uninstall this & get FoxIt Reader. MUCH better.

Norton AntiVirus

Version: 2005

Better solutions out there

Pros: It looks nice, and helps remove some viruses

Cons: Resource hog! Norton slows down even the fastest of computers. It is much too bloated, costs way more than its worth, is slow, hard to install/uninstall, needs to be re-purchased every year, and as you can tell I really do not recommend it! Better alternatives are available, just look around. Personally I use AVG and AntiVir, which are free, detect and remove viruses easier and quicker, and are a lot less bloated. Pro editions are available for users who need extra features. Check out the other antiviruses which are a lot better, there's loads more out there.
