Internet Explorer

Version: 7

Problems

Pros: Tabs, improved security, and printing options are long overdue, but welcome. Zoom feature is nice, loading and browsing are very quick.

Cons: Clumsy interface, with navigation buttons and menus on opposite sides.

Worse, however, is after I installed it, Flash content stopped working. I reinstalled Flash, still nothing. I removed IE7 and reverted back to version 6, still no good. Did a system restore, still no remedy.

Looks like the only way to get my PC back to its former healthy state is to reformat and reload... and I think I have IE7 to thank for that.

AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition

Version: 8.0.1

Has never let me down.

Pros: I started using AVG Free back when it was version 6, and it has always kept my systems protected just as well as the paid-for programs, without their bloat. Installation and setup is easy, and it uses fewer system resources than the others I've tried.

Internet Explorer 7

Version: SP2 Beta 2 build 5346

Not bad.

Pros: - Better security than IE6, and the updated interface is more like Firefox and Opera now.

- Has a built-in RSS reader.

- Improved CSS compliance.

- Printing is much better than it was with IE6.

- On my PC, it's much, MUCH faster than Firefox (which has always seemed a bit slow to me).

Cons: - It's a memory hog. (As bads as, or worse than Firefox. And that's bad.)

- For WinXp SP2 or later only. Everybody else is out of luck.

- We waited five years for this? There's little or nothing about IE7 that is that new or innovative. If you're happy with your current web browser, this one won't likely change your mind.

OpenOffice.org

Version: 2.0.3

Office for the rest of us.

Pros: Hmmm... lemme see. MS Office for $400 versus OpenOffice for free... What do YOU think?

The comparison isn't entirely that simple, but it comes close to that. OpenOffice does everything I'm accustomed to doing with MS Office, but it does it free of charge, no matter how many PCs I put it on.

OOo will save and read files in MS Office formats, but I think its greatest advantage is that it supports OpenDocument formats and can make PDFs. I can create and share files that almost anyone, using any software, can read or write. No more being bullied into using one company's product.

Take a look at some of the online word processors and spreadsheets. Sites like Writely and iRows are using OpenDocument, too.

I don't hate Microsoft. I just like having a choice, finally. And I chose to save some big bucks by using OOo instead of Office.

Cons: The help files are a little sketchy. You might want to download the PDF user guides for more info.

Mozilla Firefox

Version: 2.0.0.11

have to take some bad with the good

Pros: Firefox's menus and layout is about as good as it gets, and the browser is very easy to use. It's stable and integrates well with other programs and services. Not a huge download, and installs very quickly. Probably the best overall choice for Windows users (remembering, of course, that Windows can never be completely free of IE). Opera and Safari may be technically superior, but neither is as easy to set up and use.

Cons: Mozilla needs to focus on fixing some long-standing bugs instead of adding more bells and whistles. Firefox is a memory hog. CSS absolute positioning and unicode character support (as someone else here has already pointed out) are incomplete. There are even display glitches with nested tables that have been around unfixed since the Netscape days.

The good news is that it looks like some of these issues might finally get fixed for version 3.
