ESET Smart Security

Version: 3.0.642

It's been long overdue!

Pros: Excellent yet simple security suite. Re-designed GUI has addressed my past issues with NOD32. It works like all suites should. Fast, light and effective. This is an excellent choice or Vista users as well as XP users.

Cons: It's rather expensive and the suite isn't available where I do my on line software shopping. None the less, I'm happy I came off the cash to buy a 2 user license.

Mozilla Firefox

Version: 3

One of us isn't ready yet.

Pros: It might be me, or it could be this release came to soon for my taste. Nothing I like as far as add ons work with this version. Not one theme, not my Lexmark toolbar, not even the splash screen. Don't get me wrong, I live Firefox but I'm gonna have to stay with 2.0.0.14 until more add one work with this version.

Cons: Hell! This even changed my IE icon to a Firefox icon. Nothing works with it yet. Uninstall & reinstall did not fix the issues. System restore didn't resolve my problem. I had to do an advanced uninstall with Revo, then reinstall the older version to get straight. Sorry, but to me, it's not time yet.

Privacy Killer

Version: 2.0.624

Only for experienced users.

Pros: I say only for experienced users because it takes a real understanding of a windows platform to set it up correctly. If you have the smarts, it's a good app to have. It has a good looking GUI & some additional skins so it can match almost any Vista theme you use. But I have two issues with it.

Cons: First the licensing sucks. Its a one use only license without contacting the company. IE: If you have a hard drive failure & replace it or upgrade to a bigger drive, it will not activate a second time even on the same PC. And, (at least for me with my level of PC knowledge) it gets into places that can cause damage to an OS. It must be used with some caution & a ton of common sense.

Internet Download Manager

Version: 5.12 build 11

This is a utility people.

Pros: It doesn't have to be pretty to be great at what it does & this app surly is just that. GREAT! Media apps should look good, Ashampoo apps look great but theres only a few decent to good ones. To the comment about "the company has closed": It's not! I bought one for my lady the other day & it took less then 10 minutes to get the reg information.

Cons: Cons? There are no cons! This is by far the best download manager I've ever seen, period!

Windows XP Service Pack 3

Questions, Questions & more Questions!

Pros: Maybe it's just me but:

1) Why did MS release an update to SP-3 so soon after the initial release?

2) Do they know how many systems it crashed straight away?

3) For that matter, why no update to SP-1 for Vista?

4) Again, do they know how many Vista systems that junk destroyed?

Personally. I'm to the point where I no longer trust these so called engineers working on these new Service Packs. There is a tool available for download at MS, and another that will block these SP installs for one year after it's release date. I've ran both and I recommend others think about doing the same. I don't know about anyone else, but I'm sick of reformatting because of these Service Packs!

Cons: I've said all I care to in pros. Imagine that!
