Publisher's description of Multi User Desktop 2004

From Gamers Tower:

Increase your work space and boost your productivity. Use a new desktop for a clean environment for new tasks or connect desktops to other computers for easy remote control or a terminal server session. Multi User Desktop 2004 creates an unlimited number of real--not virtual--desktops. All desktops can run different GUIs or shells, can be connected to other computers with VNC or RDP protocols, can be authenticated with different Windows users, can store different icons, can use different display resolutions, and can be individually password-locked. The profile and icon manager creates profiles and saves all desktop-configuration settings as well as the exact position of all icons on all desktops. The Professional version features remote desktops and is compatible with RealVNC, Microsoft, and Citrix terminal servers, as well as with a Windows XP remote connection. Lite, Standard, and Professional versions are available.

VErsion 2.71.0058 supprots Windows Server 2003 Remote Desktop (RDP) and improves 3D Shell support.

Editor's review of Multi User Desktop 2004

  • 4.0 stars

This desktop manager offers some nice extras, such as remote desktop connectivity. In the default configuration, Multi User Desktop 2004 comes with five desktops, and you can easily switch among them using hot keys. The program lets you add or delete desktops, password-protect them, and give them unique labels. Each desktop can have different video resolution, wallpaper, icons, and even start-up programs. The Alt+Tab combination displays an overview of all the desktops, but you can't drag windows among them or shut down individual desktops on the fly. Also, for some reason, you can't access application preferences from any desktop but the main one. As a nice extra, the desktops support shells other than Explorer, such as Talisman. System administrators will like the remote-access feature, which lets you control other computers via VNC, RDP, or RDCP. Although Nvidia graphics-card drivers offer multidesktop managers for free, users who need greater functionality will find Multi User Desktop 2004 a good option.
