Sports fans who are tired of crawl bars or other intrusive RSS feed scrolls might like the different approach of this freeware, which only has a few minor flaws.
Streaming Stats US Sports Edition is geared toward sports feeds, but it also offers News and Odd News headlines. Its interface is a small box, only about one-tenth the size of your monitor screen surrounded with tabs that specify the type of feed you want: News, Sport, Odd News, NBA, MLB, and NFL. Options for feeds include Australian, European, and U.S. sources. It couldn't be easier to select the news source and feed type, a nice change from some of the overly complex feed readers on the market. The interface can be dragged anywhere on the desktop, but we were disappointed there was no way to minimize the application to the system tray.
Streaming Stats performed well in our tests. The feed headlines scrolled upward in the pane at the center of the tabs, and clicking a head quickly opened a browser window at the source site. The application opened sites with Internet Explorer instead of using our default browser, so that's one other slight mark against it. Overall, we were pleased with this free app and its unobtrusive manner. It offers a fresh way to get sports headlines and anyone can use it.
