Publisher's description of CDex
CDex is an application that records audio tracks from CDs and saves them to a disk as regular WAV files or as encoded sound files. This program features an MP3 decoder (MPEG 1/2/3-based) and a new LAME encoder, and has built-in support to generate OGG Vorbis files. CDex is available in English, German, Italian, and Spanish. This latest release includes better support of USB drives when using Native NT SCSI library option and various bug fixes.
Editor's review of CDex
5.0 stars
The main interface is very clean, with a CD track listing, album information, and buttons that perform major functions such as ripping, converting, CDDB lookup, and configuration. CDex includes 12 different compressed file encoders, including MP3, AAC, WMA, APE, and OGG, and also supports any external encoders.
The Profile feature stores personal configuration settings, and a bare-bones media player is a welcome inclusion. Because the program has a lot of configuration options, new users may feel intimidated. Basic functions are easily mastered, however, and well-written help files will guide anyone through the more advanced options.
The installation includes support for English, Spanish, German, and Italian languages, and many more are available from the Web site. Indeed, by all rights, the free and easy CDex should go global.

Version: CDex 1.51
Pros: This program is fantasic! I tried CD'n'Go but couldn't get that program to recognize my CD drive -- CDex had no problems with this at all. I figured out how to use it in about 30 seconds -- I am very happy.

Version: CDex 1.51
"No, this newer version doesn't get me off :P"
Cons: Didn't detect my Sony cdrw or my MSI dvd rom. I've gone back to using cdex 1.50 beta 10 which works perfectly. cdex was better when it didn't have an install file.

Version: CDex 1.51
Pros: This program works excellent on WIN98SE... not sure what the other ppl that gave it a thumbs down were talking about. Perhaps their PC is just bad.

"CDex 1.51 Crashes with WinXP Media Center Edition"
Pros: I am a long time CDex user. Never had a problem with it. Loved the program - no hate here. It(use-to) do everything I wanted and needed to copy CDs.
Those days are gone unless I can find an old version of the program.
Cons: I just got a new computer with WinXP Media Center. It constantly crashes if I'm extracting from a CD or even if I am doing analog recording of my cassettes. I have a 1GB of RAM and a boatload of space. My guess is that NT substitute driver (or whatever) is wonking up the works for MPC users.
It may also be in conflict with other software on my system (Compaq/HP has Macrovision embedded into the system to stop copying certain activities) Just speculation.
Anyway, it pains me to offer the two star salute. I had to remove CDex. The program did not work/function. I am using Switch 1.05 from NCH Swift Sound to copy my CDs and I have to find another to transfer my LPs. Dark days indeed.
