Windows Media Player 7.1 consists of seven features in a single application: a CD player, an audio and video player, a media jukebox, a media guide, an Internet radio tuner, a portable device you can transfer music files to, and an audio CD burner. These software programs are combined in one easy-to-use application designed to make playing digital media a mainstream experience. An audio CD creator and a unified player also are included with the program. This program allows you to play streaming and downloadable digital audio, video, and other Internet content; play back CD and digital recordings; and use the jukebox functionality to play or copy an entire CD to your PC in just a few minutes with one click.

Version 7.1 adds Windows Media Audio 8 encoding, Windows Media Audio and Video 8 decoding, new smart transcoding support for high-quality transferring to portable devices, and other enhancements and bug fixes.

Though still competent for basic audio and video tasks, Windows Media Player 7.1 lacks the polish of the newer, sleeker 9.0 version. It's equipped with basic jukebox functionality, an Internet radio tuner, a video player, a media guide, a portable device manager, and an audio CD burner. The jukebox features let you create and edit custom playlists, as well as play back a limited number of audio formats. The Internet radio tuner works well but lacks the variety offered by next-generation players. Video-playback quality is acceptable, but you'll find compatibility issues with AVI and other newer formats. You can switch among a limited number of skins. New players from Apple, Real, Winamp, and Microsoft outpace this dinosaur in almost every possible way. However, users with older hardware that doesn't support the newer players will find Windows Media Player 7.1 quite satisfactory.

Pros: heh thats kinda funny my comp is .. ok.. i have 1 gighertz 128 ram and a 64mb geforce... and i dont have problems with freezing, choppy video, slowness, bad audio, i think the program is perfectly fine, and ill rate it over musicmatch and other mp3's players out there, and personally getting all the features it has for free is nice... i dont feel like having to pay for somthing i can get for free

"It's easy-to-use"

Pros: I use Windows Media Player to play and organize my digital music files and to transfer them to my Nomad MP3 Player. It works. Period. Also, unlike WinAMP, the interface is simple and elegant. Never had any major issues other than a few isolated crashes when connecting to my Nomad. A feature that I would say is missing is DVD support.
