Editor's review of RealPlayer 10

  • 4.0 stars

This industry-standard, streaming-media player undergoes a face-lift and emerges with a downloadable music store and enhanced jukebox capabilities. Though not groundbreaking, the RealPlayer music store gets a thumbs-up for being easy to use and offering a flexible DRM policy. The new jukebox features let you make playlists, rip CDs, burn custom mixes, and listen to hundreds of online radio stations, The interface, though better than previous versions, still feels cluttered, sluggish, and confusing. On the bright side, audio and video quality is crisp and clear. The program still suffers from the intrusive installation, file-type hijacking, and upgrade harassment that have plagued it since its inception. Overall, though, RealPlayer has taken steps in the right direction. Users of earlier versions certainly should upgrade.

    Version: RealPlayer 10

    "Really good, but..."

    by 19monty64 on November 14, 2006

Pros: A lot of sites I visit cater to RP for viewing videos and Firefox has the RealPlayer plug-in. When installing it asks if you want to install FF with google-toolbar. The "combo" is tops in it's usefulness and configuring is extensive. After registering with an eMail address, you can get daily updates of new music, videos, movie trailers, etc. VERY intuitive app that will dLo & install ANY plug-ins that it needs to do whatever you ask, but...

Cons: ...it seems that everytime you click on a tab you get to view commercials, and a prompt to purchase a "monthly-plan" which gives you unlimited access. Without the RealAccess you are swamped with commercials that actually hinder the usability of the player. There's a lot of freeware that does just as good of a job without the ads...

Pros: The only player that can play those .rmvb files!!!

Cons: Unless you need to watch RMVB files. It's just another space eater.

    Version: RealPlayer 10

"Were it not for RealMedia, I'd never use this."

by angrykeyboarder on April 9, 2006

Pros: A must have if you want to view/hear RealMedia, RealVideo or RealAudio files.

Cons: I do like the fact that Microsoft does have some competition in the online media world, but I don't like the software needed to view/hear that media.

RealPlayer is clunky, slow, ugly, and doesn't fit in with the rest of Windows software,

It insists upon "registration" for every user on your computer (including the administrator, which makes absolutely no sense).

The default interface is annoying and is something I turn off immediately. It takes you to real.com and throws videos at you.

The default setting also put RealPlayer in your system tray and pre-selects "alerts" for you. It's annoying and just one more program to clutter your system tray. I disable right after installation (they don't make that easy, either).

And of course you're nagged to purchase the "Pro" edition.

If you don't pay attention, you get other junk installed too (namely a stupid "Try AOL" icon on your desktop and start menu).

Nope, if it weren't for the fact that I want to view RealAudio/Video files on occasion, I'd not even bother installing this sorry excuse for software.

It's really too bad, because RealPlayer for Linux is much nicer and I really like the idea of truly cross-platform media format, but the Windows version of RealPlayer stinks, period.
