Editor's review of AbsoluteShield File Shredder

3 star editors rating This free, bare-bones file shredder does what it promises, but several issues make us take pause. Since it possesses few features beyond its main job, most users won't have a problem operating the interface. You can add files to shred by browsing your PC or right-clicking on a document, but you cannot destroy entire folders. AbsoluteShield File Shredder can perform either two or seven cleaning passes, but other applications let you wipe data many more times. It's a shame you can't choose from multiple government-approved deletion methods, but the fact the help files don't tell you the name of the default algorithm is an even bigger misstep. Clearly, the program isn't ideal for paranoiacs who work with top-secret data, but home users seeking a no-cost, simple shredder are likely to find it suitable.
