Publisher's description of Lotus Symphony
From Lotus Software:IBM Lotus Symphony has something for everyone, like a community-oriented site with tips, a template gallery and support to help you succeed. Businesses can gain more control over spiraling upgrade costs, while still protecting, accessing and maintaining documents well into the future. And for developers, Lotus Symphony tools support Windows and Office applications, which means you can get even more from your current investments. This version is the first release on CNET Download.com.
Note: The Download Now link will direct you to the developer's site, where you have to register to gain access to the actual program.

Lotus Symphony is IBM's attempt to thrust its free desktop productivity suite into the ring with OpenOffice, Sun StarOffice, and ThinkFree. Despite similarities in word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation functions, Lotus Symphony isn't nearly as seasoned. For example, it can read files from Microsoft Office and make PDF files, but it won't open JPEG and other image files. You can drag or insert these images directly into open documents and presentations--with an up to 30-second delay. You'd be wise to save your work in Microsoft's DOC, PPT, and XLS formats if you want to send it to other users. On the plus side, Lotus Symphony is certainly worth a try. It's more attractive (in our view) than OpenOffice and Google Docs, with intuitive menus and icons to boot. We just hope IBM tightens its game in subsequent rounds.

Version: Lotus Symphony 1 beta
"This will cost money some day ? :( Break out the defragger"
Pros: Interface looks nice. Save to PDF.
Cons: Requires a minimum 1GB RAM. Read min requirements. Software conflicts with some optical devices (camera, mouse) must uninstall device for software to work. Can you say FRAGMENTATION? Installation slings files into frag hell. Resource Hog - slow - memory leaks . . . but this is BETA and Free.
IBM seems to be attempting to reproduce something like Open Office Suite, which is FREE and Works. Symphony is too sluggish to be productive at this time. Hopefully I can get this thing off my PC.

Version: Lotus Symphony 1 beta
"Better than I was expecting after reading other reviews."
Pros: I haven't tried out the whole thing yet and my spread sheet expererience is a big zero. I did check out the word processor and find it a very good one. The download just for that alone is worth it. I installed it on a 2 year old laptop which I upgraded the memory and installed Windows Vista on. It works great so far.
Cons: Biggest problem for me was finding the download. A link to the page would have been nice. Only way I found to have a workable file on the computer was to select the http download as the IBM download manager left me with no file in the folder it was downloading to. After unpacking clicking on the setup file started the instal with no problems.

Version: Lotus Symphony 1 beta
"Good enough for the majority."
Pros: Although not as comprehensive as the other suites, this can be extended with other programs or plugins, because it's based on Java-Eclipse, just like the newest version of Lotus Notes/Domino.
Cons: Runs slow on old computers.
