Internet advertising and pop-ups can slow down your browsing to a tenth of its speed. Ads also can track and record your browsing habits. FilterGate can eliminate all this distracting and intrusive clutter by intelligently blocking pop-up and pop-under windows, banner and tower ads, JavaScript, Web bugs, referrers, rogue cookies, graphics, music, blinking text, and applets. Also, when all you need is high-speed information, turn on the Text Only mode for graphic-free browsing. FilterGate prevents the viewing and downloading of adult content via its user-password-protected AdultFilter. This program demonstrates good performance against the majority of Net-borne ads but also provides a couple of handy extras. As is the case with many ad-fighting utilities, FilterGate sits in your system tray; right-clicking the small, green icon lets you access its bland but well-organized control panel. You can choose to allow ads on the fly by pressing a hot key, but you won't find a dedicated whitelist. This program did a good job of suppressing just about every pop-up, banner, and Flash ad we tossed at it, but even though we enabled sound notification, it didn't alert us when it quashed an ad. Therefore, we had to view the log to confirm the app lives up to its promises. FilterGate also can block cookies, referrers, and Web bugs to give you additional privacy protection. The AdultFilter feature, which prevents access to Web sites containing pornography, profanity, and violence, is a nice touch but produces mixed results. For testing purposes, we visited two well-known smut sites, but AdultFilter only blocked one of them. Thankfully, you can forbid certain URLs by adding them to a blacklist. We recommend FilterGate to privacy-concerned home users, especially those with children.

  "This product blocked access to all sites"

  Pros: I haven't had a chance to notice any!!!

  Cons: After I installed it on my computer my Intenet Explorer browser stopped working at all refusing to load and display any sites. I tried it with a dozen of my favorite sites and all I saw was either a blank screen or a pile of junk in the browser window instead of web sites. After deinstallation of this terrible product, the browser started working normally as previously. I do not recommend trying this product It's just a waste of time!

  "couldn't get it to work"

  Cons: I agree with the previous reviewer, this program blocked access to all sites, too, and I couldn't surf at all until I removed it from my computer

  "pop-ups are first shown, then blocked"

  Cons: This piece of popup blocker software almost always allows a popup window to get to your desktop and eyes and only then it is destroyed. This creates ugly user experience when pop-ups flicker before your eyes which annoys you though less than popups themselves but still annoys you. I recommend to turn your attention to other popup blocking software without this annoyance

  "Its use defeats the purpose"

  Pros: None.

  Cons: I couldn't play anything using Win media Player, I was gwtting all displayed windows

  popping up garbled with the tool bars moving accross the monitor, showing up in different places. 1 star is too much.

  "Too restrictive in pop-up removing"

  Cons: During trial FilterGate removed too much popups even those which are supposed to open when I click on a link on my own to open a new pop-up. I tried to turn on its SMART bypass option but it appeared not too smart :) and useful popu-ups were blocked all the same
