This free Notepad replacement tool allows you to edit multiple files at one time by organizing them into tabs, but it misses out on important functionality by not allowing you to close one tab at a time. 1888 Notepad Editor Plus launches in an easy-to-use interface that resembles its Windows counterpart so closely that the lack of a help guide shouldn't be a problem.
You'll find all the standard editing tools that Notepad offers plus a few extras, including the ability to change text case, modify the background color, and get a quick word count. What makes this application different is that it can open multiple text files in a single window using tabs. You can also use handy hot keys to move around the tabs.
The only glitch we found is that it doesn't allow tabs to be closed one-by-one, a standard option for any app offering tabbed viewing. There's no charge for this basic editing tool, but with so many options on the market, the inability to manage tabs better is too big a negative to make 1888 Notepad Editor Plus very competitive.
