In retrospect, it seemed like a smashing idea: six of our staff members went on an all-expenses-paid cruise to a software convention in an undisclosed tropical paradise. We should have known there would be trouble when we arrived at the dock to find our "cruise ship" looked like a slightly larger ancestor of the SS Minnow. Still, everything was fine until the third day, when the boat sprung a leak. Being a prepared group, we stowed our laptops and solar generators in waterproof cases, donned life jackets, hopped into the drink, and crossed our fingers that we wouldn't end up in Davy Jones's locker.

Eventually, we drifted to a pristine desert island, complete with lush tropical flora and all sorts of exotic fauna. After picking up a rather weak signal from what we assumed was a very strong hot spot, we set to planning our escape. But could any piece of software help us get off the island? And which programs would keep us sane and entertained while we awaited rescue? In our ongoing Desert Island Downloads feature, Download.com's stranded staff tell you which applications we put to the best use.

Episode one: Brian Satterfield, Simian Tamer
